Happy New Year!!!...........And Resolutions

Happy New Year to everyone! If 2011 was a confusing and difficult year, 2012 looks to be even more so. Or maybe its just that I've been watching Armageddon Week on one of the History Channels. I don't know if the world will end this year, but there are certainly enough ways for it to happen, from a financial collapse to an alignment of the earth and sun with a black hole later in the year.

Since the Mayans have given us until December 21, I have come up with my resolutions to deal with until then:

1) Stop smoking I actually quit for about four months last year. I need to stick to it.
2) Sell off excess belongings. I seem to have a lot of stuff stored, that I don't need.
3) Come up with new GOOD plan. Previous plan involved friend who passed away last year.
4) Research and acquire medical supplies beyond band-aids and ibuprofen.
5) Evaluate and restructure bug out bags. Another problem with too much stuff.
6) Complete overdue home-improvement projects: plumbing repairs, gutters, electrical upgrades, painting.
7) Update first aid training and acquire more medical knowledge.
8) Explore new business opportunities in the event current job is not productive.
9) Inspect, and perform or schedule repairs for all vehicles.
10) Update inventory of all preps.

I think that will keep me busy this year.

Retarded Politician of the Week: Rep. Lamar Smith, R-TX

Who would be vile enough to be in bed with Reichsfuhrer Janet Napolitano, otherwise known as the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security? Now we know.

It's Representative Lamar Smith, Republican from Texas.

Many of us recall when Reichsfuhrer Napolitano came up with "If You See Something, Say Something", a collaboration with our Chinese masters at Wal-Mart suggesting that shoppers become snitches on their fellow Americans. At the time I referred to it as "If You See It Twitch, Be A Snitch."

Well, Rep. Smith is not content to allow the Reichsfuhrer to bask in all of the National Socialist glory.   That's why he has introduced the "See Something, Say Something Act of 2011". Read the text of this legislative abomination here. In short, the bill proposes to amend the Homeland Security Act of 2002 to provide immunity for reporting suspicious behavior that may be related to terrorism (my emphasis added).

Or maybe Rep. Smith is jealous all of the attention that Obamoron extraordinaire Cass Sunstein received over his own proposals regarding "suspicious activity".

I can think of three reasons that Rep. Smith's proposed legislation is stupid.

First, can anyone demonstrate that a lack of immunity from suit has caused a substantial decline in reporting of suspected terrorist activities? One would first have to believe that some kind of liability arises from doing one's civic duty of reporting criminal activity. I try my best to keep up with the news, and I cannot think of any reporting on this issue. It appears that, once again, government is out to solve a non-existent problem.

Second, this is just more of the typical, big-government answer to every problem, whether real or perceived: more legislation!  In this instance it is legislation to prevent the filing of frivolous suits against persons who report what they believe to be terrorism related activity.  Most proponents of government solutions are totally ignorant of the law of unintended consequences.   The likely unintended consequence of this bill, if passed?   Why, there is no reason not to snitch on every observation of suspicious activity. In fact, this encourages the use of law enforcement to harass those we do not like, so long as the report of "suspicious activity" is not false. One only needs to read the news each day to know that citizens are routinely violated by black pajama-clad agents of the state over "suspicious activity." I guess Rep. Smith is either ignorant of the world around him or he believes we need more middle-of-the night visits from badge-adorned bogeymen.

Third, this type of legislation plays right into the hands of an increasingly paranoid, out-of-touch, control-freak President and his minions, who make the Nixon administration look like a bunch of nap-deprived pre-schoolers. I'm tempted to report Rep. Smith to www.attackwatch.com for stealing The Won's thunder.   If Rep. Smith plans on being re-elected, he ought to focus more on being part of the party of Not Obama. That means refusing to advocate snitching, Orwellian tactics, sexual assault of ordinary Americans who simply want to travel, and instead standing up for the civil liberties of all Americans, including those accused or suspected of crimes.

That last part is the most important. Post 9/11, everything is either becoming a crime or subjecting us to suspicion and rights violations.  Rep. Smith's proposed legislation, in my mind, purports to give citizens permission to rat on each other and invite what may be unwarranted government investigation, without fear of any liability. As Ayn Rand once wrote, "We are fast approaching the stage of the ultimate inversion: the stage where the government is free to do anything it pleases, while the citizens may act only by permission." Ms. Rand should be glad that she is dead, because we are just about there, and Rep. Smith is one of its midwives.

It is retarded to grant permission in this way to citizens who should have no fear of reporting criminal activity if the legal system is performing as it should. It is retarded to assist an administration in its Nixonian and Orwellian pursuit of punishment for its enemies. And it is the height of retardation for a politician who is not a member of the administration to engage in its brand of Reichspolitik.

Thoughts On Gold Crossing $1,800.00/Ounce

Gold just crossed the $1,800.00 line a few minutes ago. Not just peeked over the threshold, but crossed over looking to stay.

It occurs to me that gold's appreciation of $140.00 an ounce since Sunday afternoon is a harbinger we should be paying serious attention to, more so than the wild swings (mostly down) in the equities markets.

There must be a lot of gold buyers in order to drive the price up that high. A lot of people who must also believe there is a substantial chance that either the price will stay that high, or that conventional currencies will soon have such diminished value that gold is worth the price.

Does that mean that an economic collapse is imminent? I am hesitant to make such a prediction, but I don't think the underlying reasons for gold's increase paint a rosy picture.

I did not get a lot of work done today, as I was watching the stock market, gold, and the prognosticators. I was tickled to see the Dow down 634 points by the end of the day and gold up over $1,700.00 all day. I own no gold and have nothing invested in the stock market, so I have no direct interest in what appears to be the consequences of government malfeasance.

I actually take no joy in this economic meltdown, but I am glad it is finally getting in gear. I am tired of watching the slow decline and the ruinous actions and inactions of the morons we have collectively elected to govern. When those morons have finished running our economy over the cliff, we can achieve a "reset" and get back to business. But not before getting out the pitchforks, tar, and feathers.

I figure that I can be a little more sanguine about the whole mess because I have been a prepper for over fifteen years. While the preps are nowhere near complete, I feel a lot better than I would if I had only three days worth of food, no money in the bank, and no defenses.

Although it is difficult to tell what will happen over the coming months and years, and many predictions have already been made (including by me) and not come to pass, it does not appear that much good is going to come out of the country's present financial predicament. At least not until those who have caused this mess are called to account for their actions. I really believe that this may be the last opportunity to make preparations before financial circumstances become dire, including devalued currency, massive inflation, increased unemployment, and possible shortages. I am and have been making lists of food and tangibles that will be necessary in the future and/or will maintain their value.

Additionally, I have been taking note of the increasing social unrest and violence in the country. I have decided that I will carry concealed wherever I lawfully can, and am checking into more methods of concealed carry. This includes new holsters, magazine carriers, and vehicle lockboxes. I am determined that I will not make a good victim.

Other than that, I have just been trying to digest the all the news and information. There was a whole lot of coverage on the negotiations to raise the debt limit, which didn't mean an damn thing in the end. The result was just business as usual: Increased spending and no actual cuts. One step closer to the abyss.

Random Thoughts

I haven't posted in a few weeks, but not for lack of material. Seems that every day there is more to comment on. The difficult part is figuring out what to make of it all. Some thoughts that I have had in the past few weeks but have not reduced to a post:

Gun Gear: About two years ago I bought a used Marlin Papoose takedown .22 rifle. I already own one and discovered that the 3 1/2 pound rifle is the only one that my daughter feels confident shooting. So I bought one that we can call "hers". Unfortunately, and as is all too common with used takedown rifles, it did not have its factory storage case. I bought a paintball case to make do, but I have been searching for an original case for a while. I found a seller on Ebay who has a bunch of these for sale. Anyone who needs a factory red Papoose case better get one while they are available. Only $14.99 plus $4.95 shipping. Link.

I found a source of Mec-Gar magazines that I use for my Smith & Wesson nines and my Kel-Tec Sub2000 rifle. $19.99 each, free shipping on orders of $59.00 or more, and a $5.00 discount for new members. I especially like that New Innovations Shooting Supply is just over the border in Rathdrum, Idaho.   I have already ordered from them and I am impressed with their fast service and good communications. Try them.

Kel-Tec Customer Service update. Update to this post. I wrote to Kel-Tec about failing to receive the magazine catch I requested, and even sent a check to pay for what I needed. I also sent copies of my emails to and from Kel-Tec. This was in late May. About a week and a half later I received an envelope from Kel-Tec containing two magazine catches, my uncashed check, and a note apologizing for the mistake. OK, I can forgive the initially poor service, but I would caution anyone who needs parts from Kel-Tec to expect somewhat of a delay in getting what is needed.

Weinergate. I found Representative Anthony Weiner's fall from grace to be amusing, and little else. Especially if you consider that Mr. Weiner claimed, in a telephone call to the Minority Leader, Representative Nancy Pelosi, D-Commiefornia, that 56% of his constituents wanted him to stay in the House after revelations of extramarital sexting and lewd photos. I don't pity Anthony Weiner; I pity the residents of his district, at least I do 56% of them, for being dumber than a box of rocks. Add to this the number of left-wing nitwits who thought that Weiner should not resign, and you have quite the pitiful bunch. To my way of thinking, supporters of Weiner must be engaging in behavior just short of idolatry to think that the clown is somehow necessary for New York to be represented and for the nation to do its business. Assuming a population of 300,000,000 people in this country and 435 representatives, each representative has about 700,000 constituents. Let's assume that only one-half of those people are of age to serve, and that only ten percent of those would have the brains to do a fair job of representation.  That leaves 35,000 who could represent the district. Why then the hoopla over Anthony Weiner? I am convinced that Weinergate has more to do with Weiner's political cult of personality than it does with representation of the folks in that New York district. I cannot otherwise explain why political turds such as Weiner, Charlie Rangel, Barney Frank, Alcee Hastings, and David Vitter remain in office. There are other qualified candidates, and it is only a weak-minded and weak-willed electorate that prevents honorable persons from replacing the turds.

Prepping Goes Mainstream. I don't know if it is the result of a local distributor with a good sales pitch or a sign of prepping going mainstream, but I have notice that long term food storage has been appearing in more stores in the Inland Northwest. The Auguson Farms brand of long term storage foods in number 10 cans is being sold in Rosauer's supermarket, Super One Foods, and at local WalMart stores. The prices have been pretty reasonable, too. I don't know how long this will last, but any preppers in the Spokane area should check this out, in case it these stores have no long-term plans to carry these products.

The Clash Between Civilization and Islam. Notice that I did not write, "clash of civilizations". It is clear to me that civilized Western countries are being infiltrated by Islam. The media and political elite will not acknowledge it, but Western civilization is at great risk. We have lost significant freedoms to the "War on Terror" which is really the war against Islam. The Patriot Act and other assaults upon our liberty are not in reaction to some amorphous terror threat, they are a reaction to Islam's war against the West. The refusal to acknowledge this and the kowtowing to Islam are getting so bad that evangelical minister Jack Van Impe has cut off his relationship with the Trinity Broadcasting Network over what Van Impe calls "Chrislam", the accommodation of Islam in Christianity. Unless you want to wake up one day wondering why you have your ass in the air and your head pointed towards Saudi Arabia, it is high time to start questioning what is going on with Islam in America. Don't wait until your wife must be covered head-to-toe and the authorities allow your daughter to be repeatedly raped because there were not four male witnesses to the act. Daily must reads regarding Islam are Jihad Watch, Atlas Shrugs, and Bare Naked Islam. I particularly like Bare Naked Islam for its gutsy, in-your-face reporting. The Economy. There are so many predictions out there about where we are headed that it is nearly impossible to figure out when things are going to tank. That things are going to tank seems to be a point of agreement among the non-delusional. It's just the when and how that are baffling. My own thoughts seem to change each week. Will it be a European collapse first? Will the Chinese quit buying our debt? Will the problems with Japan's post-earthquake economy affect ours? Will The One start a conflagration with his Middle East policies (or lack thereof)? Will the price of oil rise and doom the economy? I don't know. What I am preparing for is the possibility of a lot of out-of-work, homeless, and hungry people struggling for survival in a hyperinflationary economic collapse with government assistance consisting of a free ride to a FEMA camp.

What I do know is that true unemployment is about 20%, utilization of government handouts is at an all-time high, people who previously made over $30,000 a year are gladly taking work at $8.67 an hour, people are scared, and more and more people are openly talking about the possibility of an imminent economic collapse. That the price of gold is consistently staying above $1,500 and ounce and silver is above $35 is a sign (to me) that there is little faith in the government, the dollar, and the economy as a whole. When those three collapse, the only real money is portable commodities. Have some, whether gold or silver, or even better extra food that can be used in the next couple of years.

Although the government continues to extend and pretend, including the now-surfacing idea that Republicans may allow a "temporary" raise in the national debt ceiling, and the left-wing mainstream media continues to prostitute itself for The One, I think that the current period is just the calm before the storm. There are plenty of signs, despite what the media and the government say, that things are not getting better and are not-so-slowly but surely deteriorating. We should all be adding to our preps while food and supplies are still relatively cheap.  I've got a feeling that this relative "cheapness" of food and goods is not going to last too much longer.

Update to Kel-Tec Customer Service Experience

Back in mid-April I wrote a favorable post about Kel-Tec customer service. I found myself in need of a magazine catch for my Sub2000 rifle and contacted customer service, inquiring as to how I could buy the replacement magazine catch. Until somewhat recently, the item had been available for purchase in the Kel-Tec website store. For some reason it is no longer listed in the store, so I made contact with Kel-Tec through their website email.

I received a prompt reply stating that the magazine catch would be mailed to me at no charge. I thought this was great service, and wrote a blog post to that effect. I think I was premature in lauding Kel-Tec's service.

On April 20, 2011 I received an envelope from Kel-Tec. It contained a pair of front sights for a pistol. Not what I requested. I sent a follow up email to Kel-Tec and received a reply that the magazine catch would be mailed to me. So I waited. Two weeks after that I sent a follow-up email to Kel-Tec stating that I had not received the magazine catch. I received a reply stating that the magazine catch had been mailed to me, but another one would be sent out. That was on May 4, 2011.

Yesterday I decided that I was tired of playing the email game and sent a letter explaining my wait and offering to purchase the magazine catch. I also sent a check to cover about twice the cost of the part (from my recollection) and postage. I hope that I actually get the part I need.

I have owned a number of their firearms over the years and have generally been satisfied with the quality for the price paid. I am not so sure now about their customer service. I still like my Kel-Tecs and have no plans on selling any of them, and I am not discouraging anyone from buying Kel-Tec. I do think that I will make a list of any parts I might need in the future and prospectively place my orders for those parts.

I will post an update when and if I get the part I ordered.

I like to give credit where credit it due, and to spread the word when I find a vendor who gives excellent service with great prices.

Greg Cote, LLC is a vendor that I highly recommend for gun magazines. Their website is http://www.gregcotellc.com/ . In the past couple of months I have made two purchases from them and I am very happy with the service I received.

Greg Cote does not have a large selection, but it appears that they only sell quality items. No ProMag, National Magazines, or other lower quality merchandise. I have purchased a number of Mec Gar pistol magazines from them for various firearms that I own.

The positives, aside from quality merchandise, are low prices, flat rate shipping of $5.99, excellent communication and super fast shipping. On my last order, which was this past Monday, I placed my order in the morning, then immediately received an email confirmation. Within a couple of hours I had an email telling me that my order had been shipped. My package arrived in Wednesday's mail. Across the country from Maryland to Eastern Washington in two days, that is outstanding.

Another bonus of sorts: If Greg Cote does not have it in stock, you cannot order it. None of this backorder nonsense when you are ordering something that you need. (We all need more gun magazines, right?)

Open Letter to McDonald's

Since McDonald's has chosen not to have email contact available, I am posting an open letter to them.

To McDonald's:

After reading about the savage beating of a customer in your Rosedale, Maryland restaurant, seeing the video, and your response I have decided that I will not set foot in your restaurants for the foreseeable future.

The actions (or rather non-actions, aside from the recording of the incident by your wannabe gangsta employee) leads me to conclude that your restaurants are not safe and are staffed by uncaring neanderthals.

Your response should have been to take responsibility and to immediately fire every employee involved. You did neither.

Until I see McDonald's apologize to the woman who was assaulted, pay her medical bills and damages for her injuries, fire every single employee who was on duty at the time of the incident, and institute new employee training to combat racism by its minority employees against non-minorities, McDonald's will not see one penny in business from me or my family.

For those who have not heard about the incident in which a white woman was viciously attacked in a Baltimore area McDonald's by two black females, was left to fend for herself by black employees, and the incident video recorded by a black employee, see story and video here. Kudos to Kel-Tec Customer Service

I like to compliment good service wherever I encounter it, since it is becoming the exception rather than the rule these days.

I needed a replacement magazine catch for my Kel-Tec rifle, so I looked on the Kel-Tec website store for the part. It was not listed, which was perplexing because I could have sworn that Kel-Tec sold just about every part to their firearms (except those requiring an FFL) in their web store.

I clicked on the tab to contact Kel-Tec, and sent them a message asking how I could get the magazine catch. The site said that it would take two to three days for them to get back to me. That was Wednesday evening. Thursday morning I had an email from Kel-Tec stating that they would mail me the part FOR FREE if I would just provide them with my address. I replied with my address, and in about an hour I received another email from Kel-Tec stating that the part was in the mail.

Kel-Tec did not even ask me where I purchased the rifle, the serial number, or for a copy of my receipt. No questions, just good service.

Makes we want to buy another Kel-Tec. Maybe that nifty PMR-30 .22 Mag semi-auto pistol.

One Practical Measure of the Cost of Obama's MENA Follies

It has been widely reported that Obama's Kinetic Military Action (his words) in Libya has thus far cost the U.S. taxpayers $600,000,000.00 and that the ongoing costs are projected at $100,000,000.00 per week, or $430,000,000.00 per month.

Since the government simply prints the money it does not have, and it does not have any, most taxpayers are not feeling the pinch of Obama's not-a-war.

Of course, Libya is but one of the follies in the Middle East/North Africa which are going on under the incompetent watch of our Dear Leader. Since February 24, 2011, when Libya was in conflict and Egypt and Tunisia had already expelled their dictators, the price of gasoline in my area has increased from $3.02 a gallon to $3.64 a gallon.

Doing a bit of simple math, let's assume that there are, conservatively, about 75,000,000 regular automobile drivers in this country of 310,000,000 people. Assuming that each driver uses ten gallons of gasoline a week, on average, each driver is paying an additional $6.20 per week for gasoline. With 4.3 weeks in the average month, that would amount to an additional $26.66 for gasoline each month.

While this does not seem like a substantial additional sum to be paying for gasoline, multiply that number by the 75,000,000 drivers. That is an additional $1,999,500,000.00 spent on gasoline each month.

Since we import about 60% of the oil used in the U.S., it seems fair to assume that 60% of the refined gasoline comes from imported oil. If gasoline prices have increased $0.62 per gallon across the U.S. since February 24, 2011, we will be transferring an additional $1,199,700,000.00 of our wealth out of the country each month.

The $600,000,000.00 in funny money frittered by the Obama administration pales in comparison with the real cost to motorists of Obama's MENA follies.

Retarded Politician of the Week Proposes Tax on Turds

Actually, taxing turds would just be the logical next step for the proposal made by Jim Suttle, Mayor of Omaha, Nebraska. Mayor Suttle is proposing that the federal government levy a 10 cent tax on each roll of toilet paper purchased. Suttle, the consummate politician, makes it clear that, while he is proposing the tax, he is not necessarily endorsing it. Interesting.....

The turd paper tax would supposedly pay for federally mandated sewer improvements in Omaha. Of course, like any tax proposed by any politician, a tax enacted never seems to go away and is often expanded beyond its original purpose. Is it such a slippery slope to go from a tax on TP to a tax on turds?

An unnamed Connecticut octogenerianette threatened to castrate an unnamed Connecticut politician who favors cutting funding to Planned Parenthood. The FBI declined to arrest the woman, even though their investigation determined that she intended the castration threat, she was not capable of carrying it out.

The woman had formerly been a volunteer for Planned Parenthood.

Is it fair to surmise that a credible threat of grave bodily harm is not a felony when made by a Moonbat? Or that there is no crime if the victim is on the Right?

Maybe law enforcement was just prejudging the old bat to be not guilty by reason of insanity.

Whenever I'm about to succumb to the distractive curiosities in life, this poem seems to emerge from the recesses of my mind. Lately there have been many distractions and curiosities. It sure would be nice to stop and gawk for a while, but there is family to be with, a job to go to, and preps yet to be put away. And miles to go before I sleep.

The Slow Decline Starts Spiralling....and Thoughts on What to Do

Last Thursday I filled up the gas tank at $3.02 a gallon. Yesterday morning I noticed that gas was $3.13 a gallon. I had to take a trip out to the Lincoln County Courthouse yesterday. Gas was $3.32 a gallon at one station I passed in Lincoln County. When I got back to River City, the place I usually stop at was $3.29 a gallon. Quite an increase in a short period of time. Despite the MENA turmoil, there is a gas glut in this country. I fear what will happen when the supply glut is gone.

Gold is hovering over $1,430 an ounce. Silver is over $34 an ounce.   The copper and nickel in our five-cent coins is worth more than the face value by over two cents. It appears that a lot of the recent increase in metals prices is related to global political instability, particularly in the MENA region. This is, of course, on top of the increase due to weakening of fiat currencies. I don't expect either the political instability or weakening of fiat currencies to abate anytime soon.

The stock market looks like it wants to dive again, but is being propped up by who-knows-what. I don't think the stock market will be indicative of anything until it crashes again and confirms an all-out calamity.

I have seen more home foreclosures cross my desk in the last two years than I had seen in all fifteen years prior to 2009. Combined. Despite the promise of fraudulent foreclosures threatening to take down the big banks, there is little effect here where most foreclosures are non-judicial. The lender takes back the property by buying it at the trustee's sale. The former homeowner just walks away.

Surprisingly, food is still relatively cheap. I don't expect this to last. I have been noticing price increases of ten to twenty percent on a lot of items over the past few months. Usually the name brands. I think that food prices will markedly increase in the very near future as the price of food commodities is added to production costs and passed along to the consumer. I think that food commodity prices will continue to increase due to the increase in price of oil-based fertilizers and production methods and also due to decreased global production. A double-whammy we will soon be seeing in grocery store prices.

Unrest is increasing in our own country and there are few leaders who are capable of recognizing and dealing with the threat. The entitlement class is at war with the middle and upper classes. Welfarites, professional disabled, pensioners, public servants, and the union thugocracy are all gunning for the last Bernankedollars in the trough. Will this lead to civil war? Who knows?  We are staring straight into the abyss of a financial collapse and so far the only leaders who see the threat are Governors Christie, Daniels, Kasich, Scott, and Walker. On the national level we are toast. The measure to keep the fedgov funded for two more weeks tells it all: Political willpower only exists to cut $4,000,000,000, or $104,000,000,000 annualized. That is not nearly enough when we are in the hole for $1,700,000,000,000 this year alone.

With the country, if not the world, spiralling down the commode, here are my thoughts on what to do right now.

First, as Ol' Remus frequently tells us: Stay away from crowds. No matter how strongly one feels about current circumstances or the need to confront the union/communist/fascist thugocracy, it just is not worth it. This house of cards is coming down like a ton of bricks. Best not to be under it.

Second, food is relatively cheap, but won't be for long. Stock up. Buy things you will eat based on your current diet, but only things that will keep for at least a year. At this point I don't think true LTS (long term storage) foods are necessary. If inflation comes on as strong as it appears, we will be eating out of our stocks before too much longer. However, there is probably enough time to stock up on "loss leaders" over the next month or two so that paying regular price isn't necessary.

Third, do you have some water stored just in case of a power outage or in case things get so bad you can't pay your water bill?  Have the capability to store at at least five gallons per person in your household plus the ability to produce more (filtration, rain catchment, etc.). At least five gallons at any time. A person needs to consume at least a gallon a day just to stay alive and dirty.

Fourth, can you keep your house warm? Again, think power outage or inability to pay the utilities. For the short term, something like a kerosene heater may work for you.  Longer term, a wood-stove, manual pellet stove, or waste oil burner is a better bet.  The best method is one for which you have a ready and steady supply of fuel.

Fifth, can you go anywhere. Do you have a means of transportation you can count on and sufficient fuel? Most of us have at least one form of transportation and likely more. Besides keeping the gas tank no less than half full, it is a good idea to store at least another full tank's worth of stabilized fuel. Fuel may become unavailable all of a sudden or the price may be exorbitant or you may just need the extra fuel at a time when putting food on the table came first.

Sixth, but not last for preparedness, can you defend what you have? Many firearms are still affordable and as of this writing ammunition is plentiful and not too expensive. I believe that every able-bodied person in the household should have a personal firearm and the training to use it. Even if you have to buy a Hi-Point pistol and Mosin-Nagant rifle for each person in your household, you would be out only about $400.00 per person with a reasonable amount of ammunition.

The foregoing are my thoughts on what to do if a person stays in place. I don't think many of us are actually going to bug out to some other location or otherwise abandon our homes during the coming crisis. I expect that many will continue to go to work or continue to look for work, requiring us to have a home to start out from and return to each day.   Additionally, many of us have children that we take to school five days a week (except in Wisconsin).

What I am expecting in the near future is marked inflation in the prices of food, energy, and other necessities. I also expect a huge increase in government taxes and fees. The powers that be simply will not cut spending in any significant amount and will be looking for additional revenue from any and all sources. For example, just this year in River City I have watched the city utilities (water, sewer, garbage) increase in price and the city tack on a $20.00 per vehicle licensing fee in addition to state fees.

It is foreseeable that we will find the costs of living increasing while our wages do not, with the result that some current necessities become tomorrow's luxuries. It may become necessary to forego electricity in favor of food, and paying the mortgage instead of having city water and garbage pickup. Walking instead of driving. Circumstances could become that dire.

Better to prepare for such adjustments than to be forced to make the adjustments. Or worse, to become a ward of, and be at the mercy of, the state.

I'm Not One of Eric Holder's People

Holder was questioned today before a House Appropriations subcommittee regarding his department's failure to prosecute members of the Black Panther Party for intimidating voters outside a Philadelphia polling place during the 2008 elections.

Representative John Culberson read a comment from a Democratic activist who stated that the Black Panther incident was the worst incident of voter intimidation he had witnessed in his career.

Holder's reply?

"When you compare what people endured in the South in the '60s to try to get the right to vote for African-Americans, to compare what people subjected to that with what happened in Philadelphia, which was inappropriate.
"I think that does a great disservice to people who put their lives on the line for my people.”

Now we know who Holder represents as Attorney General.

R.I.P. Frank Buckles

Frank Buckles, the last surviving American Veteran of WWI, died Sunday in West Virginia at the age of 110.

Buckles, who was only sixteen years old when the U.S. formally entered WWI in 1917, tried repeatedly to enlist in the war effort. He succeeded in joining the army only after convincing a captain that he was eighteen. The captain had asked to see his birth certificate, to which Buckles replied that it did not exist and that the record of his birth was recorded in a family Bible.

Mentally challenged (or deranged Moonbat, your choice, just semantics) CNN reporter Candy Crowley recently interviewed former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. Rumsfeld served under President George W. Bush.

During the interview, Crowley repeatedly asked Rumsfeld if he was aware of how much the world loves president Obama and just how much the rest of the world likes America now that Obama is president. It should be noted here that Crowley was not really asking a question so much as she was seeking validation for her desire to give Obama a mega-hummer. Rumsfeld repeatedly replied that data does not support the basis of Crowley's questions. At least as to how much the world now loves Obama and America.

The Government Storage Unit

Many of us have storage units, whether of the kind that are rented at some mini-storage complex or of the kind that we have set aside on our property. Years ago it was commonplace for this storage to consist of food storage, often referred to as the pantry. When I was a kid growing up in Alaska, we had a significant amount of space dedicated to storage of canned and frozen foods. My parents probably had enough food stored away to last us six months. Although nearly all food has to be shipped into Alaska from the lower 48, I suspect that the amount of stored food had more to do with my dad having lived through the Great Depression as a young man than any real threat of scarcity.

Today, few families have pantries or any significant food storage. Most people seem to rely on the grocery stores to be open and fully stocked. For my generation, our grandparents lived in a time when food scarcity was a real issue and having a significant food supply at home was the norm.

Aside from the grocery stores, our country today seems to believe that it is the government's job to put away reserves of food, particularly grains such as wheat and corn. At some time in the past we became accustomed to the idea that the government had some vast "storage unit" where surplus grain and other food commodities were stored. These surpluses have been used to help regulate the price of commodities and to ensure a supply when harvests are not sufficient.

I would like to posit a thought on the idea of the government storage unit filled with grains on behalf of the citizenry. Even if the storage unit were full, does anyone actually believe that the government, and the current regime in particular, would just unlock the storage unit in the event of a food crisis? This is the same regime, as represented by Rahm Emanuel, that said, "Never let a crisis go to waste." In essence, if the government were to dispense from its storage unit in a crisis, there will be a price to pay. I believe it will be: Your liberty for a loaf of bread.

From what I have been reading from various news sources, the storage unit is near empty. That is actually a good thing. Not for the sheeple and welfarites, but for free men and women. Why would any of us who cherish liberty want to rely upon the government to maintain our food storage unit? Such a reliance flies in the face of the principles of good stewardship and taking personal responsibility as the price of liberty.

Each of us as free men and women should have our own storage units full of wheat, corn, and other foodstuffs. Not just as preppers for some future crisis, but as fulfillment of our personal responsibility to provide for our selves and our families.

Now is the time to recognize that the government is not only morally and financially bankrupt, but is also unable to care for the citizenry it has covered with its ever-expanding umbrella of promises. Expect that the government, with its storage unit of food being empty, to confiscate food supplies from responsible citizens, citing the cause of the "general welfare".

We are seeing rising prices of food stuffs as I write this. Some of this rise in price is due to scarcity. Some is due to inflation. But what is inflation? A common definition is "too many dollars chasing too few goods." In other words, abundance of money and scarcity of goods. Some, such as Kellene Bishop (here and here), are predicting a six month window of opportunity between the wholesale rise in commodity prices and the retail rise in prices.

Right now is the time for preppers to make substantial additions to their long-term storage of grains and other foodstuffs and for those without food storage to get with the program and make substantial purchases. In one respect, this is an investment, provided that one buys non-perishable foods. Money spent today will likely be money not spent in the future, because the food can be incorporated into one's daily menu if the looming food crisis does not arrive. This is a far better strategy than believing that the government food storage unit will be both full and opened to the public.

Corn-itive Dissonance

There is something puzzling about the state of corn reserves in the United States. Corn prices keep going up, and corn reserves are reported to be at fifteen year lows. Blame is being placed on demand from the ethanol industry, which manufactures ethanol from corn to be blended with gasoline for motor fuel. Story here at NY Times. Corn for food is in competition with corn for fuel on American cropland. The possibility exists that we will experience shortages of corn for food and that what corn does exist for food will command high prices.

On the other hand, the U.S. has a gasoline supply glut the like of which has not been seen in 17 years, according to this story. If there is a glut of gasoline, theoretically market factors would dictate less production of gasoline until the glut subsides. If there is less production of gasoline, theoretically market factors would dictate less production of ethanol to blend into gasoline. Less production of ethanol would ease the demand for corn.

Questions: If the U.S. is in the midst of a gasoline supply glut, should there not be a reduced demand for ethanol to blend into the gasoline, and therefore a reduced demand for corn to be used to make ethanol? If so, should there be more corn being produced for food and less for ethanol production? If so, where is the corn?

I don't profess to entirely understand how commodities markets function, but something does not seem right. It makes me think that some other factor is at play, and that the ethanol industry is being blamed for high corn prices and a possible shortage. What the other factor is, I don't have a clue. It does warrant a wary eye, both as to preps and to stay ahead of what may be an engineered crisis.

The Republicans are proposing $32,000,000,000.00 in budget cuts out of a $3,700,000,000,000.00 federal budget that already exceeds federal revenues by over $1,500,000,000,000.00. Let's see, that's less than 1% of a budget that needs to be cut by more than 40% to be balanced. Story here.

Why not just vote for more spending and throw us over the cliff that we are precariously perched on?

I'm tired of waiting for the apocalypse. The Republicans should just join the Democrats in finishing off the Grand Experiment, rather than jerk our chains with this faux fiscal responsibility. We have been in need of a good revolution since 1913. Bring it on.

Balancing the budget is not impossible, but a lot of sacred cows will have to take a one-way visit to McBurgertown. John Stossel has a plan to make a lot of hamburger, but it would result in a balanced budget.

Chinese President Hu Jintao is being treated to a state dinner by our Impostor-in-Chief, Barry Soetoro. Not many things are actually made in this country anymore, but I have come up with a list of ten suggestions for preppers:

3) A knife made by Case or Bear & Sons. Or a set for your kitchen made by Rada. Ontario, Ka-Bar, Buck, and Gerber qualify if the knife was actually made in the USA.

4) A holster made by El Paso Saddlery or Don Hume.

5) A Coleman dual-fuel lantern or stove.

6) Freeze-dried and dehydrated canned fruits, vegetables, meats, and other foods from beprepared.com and honeyvillegrain.com.

7) Food-grade five gallon storage buckets from usplastic.com (the last time I ordered, the buckets and lids were both made in USA).

8) Cast iron dutch ovens and other cookware by Lodge Manufacturing.

9) Extra propane tanks by Worthington and Manchester, and fuel cans by Blitz and Wedco.

10) A bottle of Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, or other American distilled libation.

EyeWitless News: Pot-Smoking Toddler Results in Parents' Arrest

In California (surprise!), the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department has arrested the parents of a 23-month-old toddler. According to the Victorville Daily Press, a tipster turned in a video showing the parents "allowing" the toddler to smoke a marijuana pipe. The mother is also seven months pregnant.

One can only hope that, in a nanny-state such as California, that these parents will have to be reprogrammed by social services before having any unsupervised time with their children. Of course, California is so loony-left that the parents may be recruited to teach parenting classes. Arne Duncan will be calling shortly.

The news media is going somewhat bonkers over this, rehashing the last thirty years of history for our neighboring state of Idaho and its alleged racist, antigovernment, Aryan citizens. WalMart/DHS Snitch Program Fails Big Test

The widely reported snitch cooperative between WalMart and Janet Incompetano's Department of Homeland Security has failed its first major test. "If You See It Twitch, Be a Snitch" failed to detect Arizona assassin Jared Lee Loughner when purchasing ammunition on January 8, 2011.

MSNBC reports that Loughner purchased "bullets" (likely meaning "ammunition") on January 8, 2011, hours before he grievously wounded Representative Gabrielle Giffords, killed a federal judge, and wounded or killed fourteen other persons.

It is unknown as to whether the Big Sis Industries TeleScreen was malfunctioning in the WalMart store where Loughner purchased the ammunition. Loughner had earlier been turned away when he attempted to purchase ammunition at another WalMart store.

It is clear, however, that Loughner had previous run-ins with the law in Pima County, Arizona and was known to the Sheriff's Office of Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik. It is alleged that Loughner was also known by the Sheriff's Office to being treated by mental health professionals. Despite those run-ins, which are alleged to include threats against persons at a local college and drug paraphernalia charges, Loughlin was cleared to purchase a Glock pistol in Pima County after a background check. If that check was performed by the Pima County Sheriff's Office, Sheriff Dupnik has some explaining to do. Sources: Fox News and James Kelley.

What to take out of all this? Local law enforcement had the tools and the information to prevent Loughner from purchasing the gun likely used by him in the massacre, but did not due to apparent incompetence and/or corruption. Heavy-handed Orwellian federal "snitch" programs fail to produce the security that is promised in return for that surrender of liberty.

Continue to be vigilant for liberty's sake.

Retarded Politician of the Week: Pima County, Arizona Sheriff Clarence Dupnik

Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, Democrat, Pima County Sheriff: "Just let me vent my spleen about you right-wing bigots."

Actually, the quote from Sheriff Dupnik was:

"When you look at unbalanced people, how they respond to the vitriol that comes out of certain mouths about tearing down the government. The anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous," he said. "And unfortunately, Arizona, I think, has become the capital. We have become the mecca for prejudice and bigotry."

The above-quote was made by Sheriff Dupnik following the shooting of Representative Gabrielle Giffords, D-Arizona and other innocents by Jared Lee Loughner on January 8, 2011. It appeared in the Newsmax story, here.

How retarded. At a time that the citizens of Pima County need Dupnik to dispassionately perform his duties as the chief elected law enforcement officer, he engages in the type of hate-based political discourse that he decries. Persons with political views that don't match Dupnik's own leftist ideology have now been libelled as bigots. According to Dupnik, their political speech is considered prejudice and bigotry, and renders them responsible for the violence perpetrated by extremists. The use of political office by Sheriff Dupnik to espouse such views reveals him to be the sort of intolerant petty despot who is a threat to liberty and unfit for office.

Was Sheriff Dupnik aware that the shooter, Jared Lee Loughner (always three names for an assassin) was a loony lefty whose favorite books included Mein Kampf and The Communist Manifesto and that Mr. Loughner had rants about as intelligible as Keith Olbermann's? That Mr. Loughner's political views appear to be those associated with Sheriff Dupnik's own political party?

It appears that Sheriff Dupnik's office may have been aware that Mr. Loughner was unstable and prone to violence. Karl Denninger reports on this in his excellent post on the shooting of Representative Giffords and the reaction of the left: The Shameful Left and Revisionism. The paragraph on Sheriff Dupnik is a ways down in the post, so I will reproduce the relevant paragraph here:

"See, there are also, unfortunately, reports in the media that the suspect had expressed homicidal ideation - that is, a desire (or threat) to murder. That's in the press at this point, and it's a problem. If this was known to the local law enforcement community, why wasn't he evaluated with regard to his mental stability? That may explain why the Pima County Sheriff was talking trash yesterday - he knows he's got himself a bit of 'splaining to do once people figure out that they had this guy in custody at least once, knew he was potentially unstable and that he was a threat to others. If they had done their job perhaps this wouldn't have happened - you see, it is already illegal for someone who is mentally ill to purchase and/or own a firearm, which begs the question: did every opportunity exist to interdict this individual at some point in the last couple of years, including direct contact with law enforcement who were aware of homicidal threats and his behavior at his college, and yet either the procedures were not in place to refer him for evaluation or they were not followed?"

Representative Giffords was the victim, along with other innocents, of a crazed criminal gunman. I hope that Representative Giffords and the other wounded innocents have a speedy and full recovery. The survivors of those who were murdered by Mr. Loughner have my sympathy. This was a tragedy.

The citizens are the victims of outrageous statements made by the media and elected officials including Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik. These statements, following this false-flag event, will undoubtedly be used by tyrannical fascist politicians to further limit the Constitutional rights of Americans to freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, and the right to keep and bear arms. Mark my words.

False-flag event. I have chosen those words carefully. When a politician from the left exploits the murderous actions of a leftist extremist for the purpose of demonizing persons who had no connection to the murderous actions of the leftist extremist, I consider that to be a false-flag event.

The only reason to demonize persons who had no connection to the murderous event is to limit their freedoms. It isn't hard to figure out. Sheriff Dupnik has already told you that some political speech should be limited because it is, in his left-wing opinion, hateful, prejudiced, bigoted, and responsible for the violence of left-wing nutjob Mr. Loughner. That is but one example of freedoms to be limited.

Kudos to my own Representative, Cathy McMorris-Rodgers, who reacted as reported by Fox News:

"Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., who appeared with Clyburn, said she is not aware that alleged shooter Jared Lee Loughner is tied to a political movement or engaged in a politically motivated act.

"You know, his favorite books are 'the Communist Manifesto' and 'Mein Kampf.' I think it's important that we recognize that this is an individual that had -- that has mental challenges, and we need to act appropriately in dealing with him and making sure that justice prevails here," she said."

A criminal act was committed by a criminal in Arizona yesterday. Sheriff Dupnik turned a criminal act into a political action for the purpose of libelling a particular brand of political speech, turning the actions of a criminal into a false-flag event that will likely affect the freedoms of a generation of American citizens. Again, how retarded.

A fake standoff in Washington D.C. is coming soon. No, not the Guardians of Liberty assembling on January 21, 2011. I’m talking about the much ballyhooed Republican attempt to repeal Obamacare. Who are they trying to fool? Oh, it’s us. Sorry.

The Republicans have no hope of repealing Obamacare in this session of Congress. I know that the Republicans are following through on their promise to take up the repeal of Obamacare, but the announcement of a vote on January 12, 2011 is nothing more than showmanship without substance.

First, in the House of Representatives the Republicans would have to get a majority in favor of repeal. The Republicans may now have a majority in the house, but that majority is laden with a number of “squishies” and RINO’s. I actually think that Boehner is likely to get a majority vote in the House.

Second, a repeal bill would have to pass in the Senate. Not likely. Republicans would have to be able to bring the bill to the floor for a vote, requiring 60 votes to be lined up. Harry Reid might let that happen without 60 votes lined up, just to be able to claim that he acted fairly. And why not? Republicans likely do not have the 51 votes to get a repeal bill passed. Dingy Harry will use every bribe and threat he has to keep his Democrats in line, and might even be able to lure a couple of squishies his way, like Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe. Maybe Dingy Harry will channel the purgatory-bound spirit of Ted Kennedy to possess Scott Brown. Whatever. Republicans do not have the number in the Senate.

Third, does anyone believe that Obama would sign the repeal of his signature accomplishment? Or that Republicans, even if they were able to pass a repeal of Obamacare, could do so with veto-proof majorities? Again, not likely and not likely.

Anyone who believes Republicans will accomplish a repeal of Obamacare in this session of Congress are drinking the Republican kool-aid and are falling again for the false left-right paradigm that keeps the two parties in power. They will want us to believe that they tried and failed, but went down swinging. If we keep voting for them in the future they will have a better chance at keeping their promises. Yeah, right.

A practical answer to Obamacare, that is well-known to Republicans, can be found in the former Hyde Amendment. Henry Hyde, for those who don’t know, was a Republican Congressman from Illinois who is probably most famous for adding an amendment to spending bills that prohibited the use of federal funds for abortions. That type of amendment to spending bills has the power to cripple an agency or program where repeal or elimination would be impossible. Since all funding bills must originate in the House of Representatives, the Republicans have control of funding for Obamacare and can force the Senate and Obama to accept particular funding provisions or have no funding at all.

How can this be accomplished with Obamacare? Target its provisions for a lack of funding. Specifically.

A few examples:

The Internal Revenue Service has been charged with compliance on purchase of health insurance. The House of Representatives can refuse to fund the IRS compliance efforts or can specify that the IRS is prohibited from using any of its funding for compliance. Further, the House funding bill can specify that if the provision is violated, the IRS would lose all funding.

The IRS is also charged with enforcing the odious “1099 provision” that would require filing 1099 miscellaneous income forms for all transactions over $600.00. This provision is bad news for small businesses and is another example of unneeded and unwanted government intrusion. The House could specify in its funding for the IRS that the 1099 requirement cannot be enforced using government funds, just like the health insurance provision.

There are many other provisions of Obamacare that are to be administered by the Department of Health and Human Services. The House should take aim at each specific provision and either defund or enact a prohibition on use of funds for those provisions, with the threat of a total loss of funding should the agency use funds for prohibited activities.

Death of Obamacare by a thousand spending cuts and prohibitions is possible where repeal is not. It might also be wildly popular with the voters if the Republicans make a point of targeting the most odious parts. If the Republicans were to turn the chipping away at Obamacare into a populist cause, Obama and the Democrats might just have to accept each cut to keep the government running and to maintain some electibility going into 2012.

Let’s see if any of the Republican leadership is interested in picking up this idea. After all, it is nothing new, just larger in scale than previous efforts such as the Hyde Amendment.

We will soon get to see whether the effort to repeal Obamacare is a one-act play or the opening salvo in a war against the ever-increasing encroachment of an extraconstitutional government. I’m betting on a one-act play, but I am a pessimist by nature.

EyeWitless News: Poll Reveals Majority of Americans Favor Taxing the Rich to Balance the Budget

Idiocy reigns supreme in Amerika. Sixty-one percent of Amerikans favor taxing the rich in order to balance the federal budget, according to a 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll conducted from November 29 to December 2, 2010. Only four percent favored cutting Medicare and three percent favored cutting Social Security. Story at Newsmax's MoneyNews.

I would theorize that the 1,067 adults polled were randomly selected from various nursing homes in Connecticut, Delaware, and Massachusetts, but I would consider the source to be even more suspect. Any poll commissioned by CBS, the home of "Rathergate", is deserving of a truckload of skepticism. I have noticed that CBS polls of the Oba-One's approval are the most wildly optimistic of all the polls reported at RealClearPolitics.com. I think that the 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll is nothing more than a fraud designed to give lily-livered-liberals a shot of courage and reason to believe that the public is in favor of further job-killing progressive taxation.

Which reminds me of an old, humorous explanation of the modern tax system and the class jealousy and warfare that the system has abetted since the social planners unveiled it generations ago. I had forgotten about it until a friend emailed it to me today. It goes like this:

THE TAX LAWS EXPLAINED IN BEER DRINKING TERMS

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100...

If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this...

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7..
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So, that's what they decided to do as fair.

The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve ball. "Since you are all such good customers," he said, "I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20". Drinks for the ten men would now cost just $80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes. So the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men ? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his fair share?

They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer.

So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by a higher percentage the poorer he was, to follow the principle of the tax system they had been using, and he proceeded to work out the amounts he suggested that each should now pay.

And so the fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% saving).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33% saving).
The seventh now paid $5 instead of $7 (28% saving).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% saving).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% saving).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% saving).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But, once outside the bar, the men began to compare their savings.

"I only got a dollar out of the $20 saving," declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man,"but he got $10!"

"Yeah, that's right," exclaimed the fifth man. "I only saved a dollar too. It's unfair that he got ten times more benefit than me!"

"That's true!" shouted the seventh man. "Why should he get $10 back, when I got only $2? The wealthy get all the breaks!"

"Wait a minute," yelled the first four men in unison, "we didn't get anything at all. This new tax system exploits the poor!"

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had their beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and government ministers, is how our new tax system works. The people who already pay the highest taxes will naturally get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas, where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

Happy New Year to everyone!

Although there is plenty of reason for doom and gloom out there, what with Obama still being president, Bernanke still printing money, etc., I am hopeful that this will be a better year than 2010.

May all the unemployed find good jobs, the homeless find homes, the unsaved find Salvation, and may the godless federal reserve and its big bank cronies be brought to their knees.

I won't hold my breath waiting for those things to happen, and will instead concentrate on my personal resolutions for the New Year.

My New Year's resolutions:

1. Quit smoking. Time's up for this unhealthy and expensive habit.

2. Organize and catalog my preps: food, gear, guns/ammo, etc.

3. Consolidate my car collection down to a daily driver, a small pickup, and a four-wheel drive.

4. Clean out my storage unit, organize what I am keeping, sell or give away the rest.

5. Research and try out recipes for long term storage food.

6. Start a part-time home business as a hedge against the economy.

I think these resolutions should keep me fairly busy through 2011. The quitting smoking will probably be the most difficult. I have quit smoking a number of times in the past fifteen years, only to start again when I get stressed. This time, my determination is different than before. I am more concerned about my health, the money spent on tobacco, and about going into an uncertain future with a tobacco addiction.

The remaining resolutions are an extension of my projects from 2010. I might actually get them done this year.

Zelman was an uncompromising leader of the right to own firearms. Although I did not know him, I benefited greatly from his work, which helped to form my own opinions on the Second Amendment and the dangers posed by a government that disarms it's citizens.

Inflation: It's definitely here as far as food prices go. Two items I recently purchased have radically increased in price were four-packs of pudding and sugar. Those pudding packs were $0.99 within recent memory, now they are $1.49 for the store brand. And sugar was recently about $2.99 for a five pound bag of name brand. Now it is $3.09 for a four pound bag. That's right, the standard size sugar bag is only 80% of what it was and it costs more. If it weren't for my daughter wanting pudding now and me having two teaspoons of sugar in my coffee, I would do without both.

Deflation: Some ammo prices are definitely getting more reasonable. I was in the White Elephant (sporting goods and toy store in Spokane) the other day, and noticed that the 525 packs of .22 ammo, both Federal and CCI, were $14.99. Blazer Brass 9mm was $10.99 and .45acp was $18.99. Compares very favorably with what I have been seeing online. I found a few very good deals on 9mm and .380acp online and had to stock up. Sportsmans Guide has Federal 9BP 115 gr JHP's for $17.47 a box of 50 ($16.60 if you are a club member like I am, and an additional 2.5% off if you have the Sportsman's Guide Visa). SG also has free shipping right now on $99+ orders. Graf & Sons is another place I have been shopping lately. They recently had CCI Blazer 9mm 115 FMJ for $7.99 a box, and Blazer .380 for $10.99 a box. Right now they are also running free shipping on $50+ orders, including ammo. I really like the Blazer at this price because I don't feel bad about not saving my brass at the range (besides the fact that the range discourages picking up one's own brass).

Gun Show Last Weekend:   Went to this on Sunday looking for more ammo cans. The vendor I have bought from in the past was there, but sold out of .50's. I did see a few good deals, such as an old Stevens Favorite .22 for $75.00, but I passed on it because the extractor looked to be worn out. There were some good deals on ammo there, but a few "scalpers" as well.  A few tables had the same boxes of bulk .22 ammo as the White Elephant, but were being hawked for $25.00.  I have noticed that there is no shortage of opportunists reselling ammo or selling used guns for more than I could get them in a retail store.

Rifle Cleaning Chores: I had bought a Russian Mosin-Nagant rifle while Bud's Gun Shop had them for a good price. Unlike the SKS's and Romanian AK's I had bought in the past, this Mosin had a very dark and dirty bore. The crown looked good, as did the chamber and what I could see of the rifling. I cleaned out the cosmoline with WD-40 (it just melts the stuff away), then scrubbed several times with Hoppe's No. 9. Not much luck with that, so I switched to Bore Scrubber. A little more gunk removed and more blue-gray stuff on the patches, but still a lot of crud in the bore. After doing a little internet searching, I came across a recommendation for Butch's Bore Shine. It was $10.99 locally for an 8oz bottle, which is about middle-of-the-road price for bore cleaner. I soaked a patch, ran it through, and waited about ten minutes. The next patch took out more crud than all of my previous scrubbing combined. I have given the bore two scrubbings with Butch's so far, and while the bore is still dark I can at least clearly see the lands and grooves. I figure I have about two more scrubbings to go. I'm not looking for a bright bore, just cleanly defined lands and grooves.

Cheap Shotgun Update: The Ultra 87 shotgun I ordered from Cheaper Than Dirt arrived and I picked it up today from my local FFL dealer.   I figure that others must have also considered $145 for a defensive 12 gauge to be a good buy, because CTD has sold out. I will report a little later on about fit and finish, but it may be a while before I get to go try it out at a friend's property out of town.

Preps: Despite the reported coming price increases in grains, I found 20lb bags of white rice for $6.72 at Winco Foods the other day. Wheat berries went up a bit to $0.47 a pound, but popcorn went down to $0.58 a pound.   Bought some of all three to add to the preps, as I cannot help but think that some radical food inflation is just around the corner.

Well, I suppose that is enough for now. Gotta get back to my day job.

Questions for WaPost Hoplophobes

I would not have noticed the blatant editorialization (as opposed to genuine news reporting) in As Mexico Drug Violence Runs Rampant, U.S. Guns Tied to Crime South of Border by Washington Post Hoplophobes James Grimaldi and Sari Horwitz, except that I found it summarized at Newsmax last night. I notice that since David Codrea exposed Newmax's repetition of the WaPost muck at The War on Guns, Newsmax has dropped the link from its front page. Go read the WaPost editorialization here, then see if you agree that the following questions need to be answered by Grimaldi and Horwitz.

1) They mention that certain data is confidential under a law passed by Congress in 2003. Are they referring to the Tiahrt Amendment? If they are, why don't they just come out and say so. I get the feeling that these two hoplophobes are using the old journalistic trick of injecting mystery into their editorialization to attract attention. They act as if they know something we don't, that they are privileged to know, and that we should just trust them to explain the mystery without them having to produce a source. If these two pseudo-reporters are referring to the Tiahrt Amendment, it is the same law that provides for gun trace data to law enforcement when a gun has been recovered in a crime investigation, but prohibits law enforcement from peeking into gun transfer records to determine what guns are owned by law-abiding citizens. The gun trace data allowed by the Tiahrt Amendment are the likely source of information obtained by Grimaldi and Horwitz.

2) If this information is confidential, how did Grimaldi and Horwitz obtain it? Are they BATFE stooges? It's not enought to say they reviewed documents and court cases. Cite the sources, or your "reporting" is suspect.

3) Grimaldi and Horwitz state that FFL dealer Bill Carter's Carter's Country stores are the sellers of guns found at Mexican crime scenes. Was Carter's Country the last recorded seller or somewhere in the stream of transfers?

4) Who were the last recorded purchasers of the guns and were the guns stolen? What "transfers", both legal and illegal, occurred after the recorded transfers at Carter's Country?

5) What definition are Grimaldi and Horwitz using for "high-powered"? My understanding of the term does not include intermediate rounds such as .223 Remington/5.56x45 and 7.62 x 39. Grimaldi and Horwitz appear to be referring to these rounds as high-powered. Are they doing so to inflame the reader against guns chambered for these rounds?

6) What do Grimaldi and Horwitz mean when they refer to AR-15 and AK-47 rifles as "assault rifles"? Assault rifles in the military context are selective-fire or full-auto. Besides mixing the apples and oranges of semi-auto AR-15's and presumably full-auto AK-47's, are Grimaldi and Horwitz simply confused or trying to confuse the reader.

7) Do Grimaldi and Horwitz know that AK-47's are Class III firearms and that Carter's Country was not likely licensed as a Class III dealer? Do they even know what Carter's Country was licensed to sell? Would they tell the reader the truth even if they did know?

8) What is the source of Grimaldi's and Horwitz's claim that Mexican drug cartels are turning to the U.S. for their supply of guns? Do Grimaldi and Horwitz even know that under most circumstances Mexican nationals cannot purchase firearms from FFL dealers?

9) Are Grimaldi and Horwitz alleging that FFL dealers in Texas, and in particular Bill Carter, are selling firearms to Mexican nationals/non-U.S. citizens in violation of federal law? What information do they have that such transactions are actually occurring?

10) If criminal drug cartels from Mexico are obtaining firearms in the United States, what is the federal government doing to prevent Mexican criminals from entering the United States and illegally obtaining guns here?

11) Since state-issued identification is required to purchase guns from any FFL dealer in every state in the United States, how many states are issuing state identification cards and drivers licenses to non-citizens? How many non-citizens have used these state-issued identification cards and licenses to purchase guns from FFL dealers? How many governmental entitities have approved purchases by non-citizens under the the mandatory (for FFL dealers) instant-check system?

12) How many of these guns were purchased by entities or persons affiliated with the United States government?

13) When Grimaldi and Horwitz refer to laws supported by the "gun lobby" which supposedly make prosecutions of law-breaking FFL dealers difficult, who is the "gun lobby" and what laws are they referring to?

14) If Carter's Country is one of the largest volume firearm dealers in Texas, just what percentage of their sales are involved in crimes? What percentage of sales are never involved in crimes? Can Grimaldi and Horwitz actually show a causal connection between any behavior by Carter's Country and the guns found in Mexico, or just a conclusion based on innuendo?

15) If there is no indication that any of the FFL dealers, cited as the source of guns in Mexico, did anything wrong, what is the point? It sure does not seem to be that the government is competent at arresting Mexican drug cartel members and illegal aliens.

16) Do Grimaldi and Horwitz even understand what a straw-purchaser is? Have either of them ever examined the form that must be completed by a firearm purchaser? Purchasing a firearm for one's spouse is not considered a straw purchase. The form that must be completed by the purchaser asks if the purchaser is the actual buyer. Obviously, lying about this is a crime. That is where the problem lies, no pun intended.

17) Considering that BATFE routinely harasses FFL holders, including threats of revoking licenses (and actually succeeding) for minor paperwork errors, why should anyone believe that BATFE lacks the ability to investigate and prosecute FFL dealers who violate the law? For instances of abusive and extralegal conduct by the BATFE in its investigations, consider the fates of the General Store in Spokane, Washington and Red's Trading Post in Idaho. If anyone still doubts the power of the federal government to investigate illegal firearm transfers, consider what happened in Ruby Ridge, Idaho in 1993.

18) Grimaldi and Horwitz imply that FFL dealers are the problem. To what degree did they investigate the failure of the U.S. government to enforce the immigration laws and the border with Mexico? It seems that preventing illegal aliens from entering the U.S. and having tough border controls would prevent a substantial amount of the supposed gun trafficking. It could reasonably argued that a substantial amount of the blame could be placed squarely on the U.S. government, and Janet Napolitano in particularly, for the utter failure to prevent illegal aliens from freely crossing the border, with and without guns.

19) Why is there little mention of the extensive corruption throughout the Mexican government, including the complicity of Mexican police in drug and weapons trafficking? It seems that Mexican President Calderon could clean house, enforce its side of the border, and take on the drug cartels. Mexico is loudly attacking a symptom of a larger problem that it has the power to control, but lacks the will to do much more than complain to the U.S.

20) Why do Mexicans not have the right to possess firearms for self-defense? Is there government of the side of the people or the drug cartels. Denying citizens the ability to defend themselves against organized crime indicates which side the Mexican goverment is on.

There are many other questions I have after reading the work of Grimaldi and Horwitz, but I figure that 20 questions is enough. My point is that every trumped-up account of guns found in Mexico tries to lay the blame on FFL dealers who are stringently regulated and have no more control over the end use of the product than a sporting goods store does over a Louisville Slugger. So-called reporters rarely seem to turn the scrutiny back on to their government sources, for whom these "reporters" are often nothing more than sycophants.

Of course, the aforementioned commentary consists of my opinion. Many years ago I had some training in journalism and I work in the legal profession, so I am not making any claim to objectivity. Nor am I making a claim to being a Washington Post news reporter.

Defense Shotgun on the Cheap

Cheaper Than Dirt has an almost unbelievable deal on a defense shotgun, the Ultra 87 by Century International Arms. I don't know how long they will last, but for now they are selling for $145.77. Item 70782.

At this price, there is good and bad, of course.

The good:
Based on Remington 870 design, with improved safety on tang like Mossberg.
Is drilled and tapper for weaver rail, which is included.
Has sights mounted to barrel, including a fiber optic front sight.
Comes with sling swivels mounted.
Black synthetic furniture and 19" barrel. Others have reported that barrel is chrome-lined.
Inexpensive, including no credit card surcharge by CTD and $7.99 shipping (same amount for two shotguns).

The bad:
Made in China.
Some Century products have not been well-crafted. Some owners have reported the front sight to come loose.
Apparently these shotguns do not have a durable finish and some owners have reported rust problems.
Future parts availability may not be there.
No guaranteed compatibility of parts with Remington or even similar Chinese shotguns.

It appears that Century has been marketing this shotgun in one form or another for several years. From my own internet search, the owners' reviews have been mixed. About 75% seem to be happy with the shotgun, despite its shortcomings. Some others have said that the shotgun is poorly made.

If this turns out to be a serviceable shotgun, it may be a good, inexpensive home defense or truck gun, especially considering the included swivels, sights, and rail. I think it would be handy to have as a "handout" defense gun for friends and relatives who show up unarmed when SHTF.

I bought one for myself and will report back on it when it arrives at my FFL dealer.

Mail a Dirty TSA Exam Glove

I just thought of an interesting idea to get the attention of legislators and executives of the major airlines as a protest against TSA (team sexual assault?) screening procedures.

Remember when citizens were pissed off at the government and mailed tea bags to them? I had an alternate idea to mail a bag of cheap pork rinds to my legislators. A little more expensive than a tea bag, at $1.00 per bag of pork rinds plus $1.38 postage.

How about mailing a dirty blue exam glove to each of our federal legislators and to the board members of each major airline? By dirty I mean having had contact with dirt or dust sufficient to appear used. I would not suggest dipping the glove in urine, animal feces, or any other dangerous substance. The blue nitrile gloves are fairly inexpensive and available at Harbor Freight Tools and other home improvement, hardware, and auto parts stores. I have a box of them in the garage for when I paint things or work on the cars.

Of course, to make the message more effective it might help to write "TSA" on the glove with a sharpie and enclose/attach an "instruction card" reading something like: "Official TSA exam glove for Senator (blank). Please bring with you to the TSA security station at the airport for use in your security screening process." I don't believe in sending anything anonymously through the mail, so I would also enclose a letter explaining the purpose of the dirty exam glove. I could be something as simple as: "Dear Senator: I urge you to defund the Transportation Security Administration for its heavy-handed, unsanitary, pornographic, and unnecessary assault on American citizens at the gates of America's airports."

If thousands of citizens sent a dirty blue exam glove to his federal legislators and to the executives of the major airlines, could those symbolic acts drum up even more attention against TSA? Maybe inspire airlines to put pressure on legislators to defund TSA? Maybe even inspire my lazy, corrupt senators to push for defunding TSA?

For those of you taking the time to read this: Is this an idea that could get traction? How about improvements or some kind of standardization (such as blue glove, instruction card, suggested language for the letter)? Is anyone with a high traffic site interested in putting this idea out there?

Veteran's Day

Thanks to all the veterans out there who have sacrificed for our freedoms. Today I remember the veterans in my family: Dad (WWII), Grandpa (WWII and Korea), Grandpa Charles (WWI), and brother Gary (Vietnam).

Yesterday I went to a school assembly organized by the new music teacher at my daughter's school. All of the grades were represented and sang patriotic songs in honor of our veterans. Veterans from as far back as WWII were in attendance, and there was an honor guard from Fairchild Air Force Base to present the U.S. and state flags. It had to be the best student assembly I have seen in the four and a half years that my daughter has been going to this school. Each class of children, from the kindergarten throught the sixth grade, had rehearsed their songs and really put their hearts into it. I don't know why, but I get kind of choked up when I hear kids singing "God Bless America", "America the Beautiful", "The Star Spangled Banner" and "You're a Grand Old Flag." Makes me think that there is hope for this country, yet.

What floored me, though, was when the sixth grade class sang the Battle Hymn of the Republic. I guess the ACLU must have been frightened off by the M14 rifles carried by the FAFB honor guard and thus weren't around to protest the "Glory Hallelujahs" and mentions of the Lord. Nice to know that the religion haters haven't succeeded in banning all mentions of our Creator.

I just about fell out of my chair when I read that the Worst Person in the World (his own label is perfect to stick on him) Keith Olbermann has been suspended for making political contributions to fellow collectivists Jack Conway, Raul Grijalva, and Gabrielle Giffords. The suspension is indefinite and without pay. Probably good for MSNBC as it may be a good excuse for them to get rid of his low-rated hatefest.

The parent company, NBC News, has tried to hide its own obvious bias towards collectivists by banning political contributions from its employees without prior approval of the network president. On the surface the rule seems laudable, but it actually saves NBC the embarrassment of having public records of political contributions proving that NBC journalists are overwhelmingly collectivist.

Olbermann, not content to embarrass only himself, has succeeded in embarrassing NBC News by confirming the bias that NBC had tried to dispel with its no-political-contribution rule.

Get Ready to Ride the QE2

Helicopter Ben Bernanke has officially announced Quantitative Easing, Part 2, as of yesterday. I noticed that stocks are up this morning. No reason not to expect that with a bunch of free money being thrown out willy-nilly. The tomorrow of paying the bill will never come, they think. Just pump that market up, up, and away.

Looks like not everyone is buying it. The Dow is up 1.92% and S&P is up 1.91% as I write this. Nice for those hypertraders still in the market and the insiders trying to pump up prices before they take their money and run. And run they will.

The real story is in the price of gold and silver. Gold is up over 6% from yesterday's low and silver is up a similar amount from yesterday's low. That spells confidence.

Looks like I had better use my federal reserve notes to buy more toilet paper or else I will have to use federal reserve notes when I have to take a number QE2.

On another note, a tangibles acquiring opportunity is coming up this weekend at the Spokane Gun Show, which runs from Friday to Sunday at the Spokane Interstate Fairgrounds. At the last one I picked up a handful of .50 ammo cans for $5.00 each. Very little rust and like-new (if not new) seals. If that vendor is at the show, I will buy a dozen this time.

If You Aren't Votin', Quit Bitchin'

Without naming names, I have read plenty of commentators stating that they do not vote in elections. Excuses range from "What does it matter?" to "I won't give legitimacy to this government." Most I have read are supporters of restoring this country to its Constitutional foundation, a worthy goal.

Refusing to vote, however, is inconsistent with restoring this country to its Constitutional foundation. The Constitution established our Republic, a representative democracy where voters participate in the government by electing representatives. Constitutionally, this was by direct election of Congressmen and indirect election of Senators through state government. Our central government and most, if not all, of our state governments are thoroughly corrupt and operating extracontstitutionally, and this has occurred by the voters' choice of representatives and apparent continuing consent through election after election.

The way to begin the change we need is to exercise our right to vote in representatives who will restore Constitutional government. Yes, before change will occur the government does have to be so bad that even your average idiot voter is persuaded to vote against the collectivists. In the meantime, supporters of Constitutional government will continue to be a minority, having to vote for some establishment politicians, vote for "fringe" candidates, or taking it upon ourselves to run for office. The key here is that, if we believe in Constitutional government, by its very definition it requires us to participate. That means voting.

I am disturbed by the prospect of Constitution-loving individuals who refuse to vote. If they will not participate in the process now, when the Republic most needs individuals to participate and steer the country back to its Constitutional foundation, when will they participate?

Will it be when voters like me have finally participated and persuaded enough that voters will have elected a government that returns to Constitutional principles? Or will it be after the "revolution" that some say will be necessary to end the increasing tyranny as the government further deviates from the Constitution?

I have to admit, I get nervous when someone refuses to participate in Constitutional government at the same time he or she is demanding a return to it. It seems like some will only vote when they get the government they want. Sometimes I am afraid to ask exactly what that is.

I have already voted this year. Although I will likely continue to dislike the government that I will get, I will respect the Constitution and participate. If there is a need to change the government due to its continuing down the road of tyranny, I will respect the Constitution and participate. In between, I will continue to be critical of government that oversteps its Constitutional bounds.

This is my personal feeling about those who do not participate: If you aren't votin', quit bitchin'.

A Foot in Each World?

Everyday life feels increasingly complicated. I have a business to run and decisions to make about it's (and my) future. Although I feel that something is terribly wrong in this country that will make business and personal decisions about the future irrelevant, I have to operate on the assumption that I will still be in business a year from now, three years from now, and even ten years from now.

By the same token, I know that this country has been through numerous crises in the past and that it is quite likely that I will still be driving my desk for the foreseeable future. Still, there are signs that civilization as we know it could end any time (for whatever reason: war, EMP, other natural disaster, economic collapse, etc.). I do not believe in not having preparations, nor do I believe that the government will take care of everyone come TEOTWAWKI.

It sure feels odd, renewing an advertising contract for another year, taking on a three year telecommunications contract, and scheduling my continuing education into the future at the same time that I am putting away additional food stocks, equipment, ammo, and other preps. Most of the oddness stems from budgeting for two lives: the one I live every day and the one that I fear I may be living in the not-too-distant future. It is like having a foot in each world, watching for the time that I will have to pick up one foot and plant it firmly with the other.

I suppose if I were wealthy it might be different. Then I could have my fully stocked bunker out in the hinterlands while I entertained clients at my cosmopolitan McMansion without a worry in the world. Nah, I was raised too blue-collar for that. I would have a fully stocked bunker in the hinterlands, but I would have friends over to my enormous pole-barn shop to drink beer and talk about guns.

Meanwhile, the limited budget keeps me searching for prep bargains. Juan Williams. I've always liked Juan because he added an air of rationality and dignity to the liberal side. Something that Alan Colmes always strived for but never could attain. I repeatedly disagreed with Juan's positions, but he was the type you could disagree with at the same time you had a beer with him. Very, very rare among liberals. Juan found out what happens when you dance with the devils: you get burned. You associate with irrational bigots, and eventually you are associated with them. The irony is that the bigots were calling Juan a bigot. Of course, this close to the election, the shrill, closed-minded, hysterical, emotional, illogical "progressive" left is exposed for what it is at a time less than beneficial for their cause. Thank you, Juan, and good luck at your new/old job at Fox.

Patty Murray. My tirade against Washington's Asshat Extraordinaire Senator Patty Murray might be getting a little old, but I will not relent until that ignorant, marxist twit is gone. Latest Dino Rossi ad reminded me of something incredibly relevant, more relevant that Patty Moron's belief that abundant abortions are essential to the functioning of society. Dino's latest ad has audio of Patty Murray claiming that she not only read the Obamacare bill, but that she helped write it. Go to that link. Should we all presume that Asshat Patty also read and helped write the $800,000,000,000.00 Porkulus bill that created no jobs? I think it is safe to give her credit for that. Rossi is within range of taking out this wart on America's ass, but Murray has the illegal aliens out in force to scare up votes (the dead people move too slow, the imprisoned have other commitments, and the insane just won't follow directions.).

Preps. I had been looking for a rifle with a longer range than 7.62x39 and 5.56x45 are capable of. Problem is, I did not want to spend a lot of money, wanted something simple, wanted something with iron sights, and wanted something where ammo was currently plentiful and cheap. After checking around a bit I finally settled on the Mosin-Nagant. I bought a specimen in excellent refinished condition for under $100.00 (I know that I missed the boat from when even Big 5 was selling them for $69.00. I will pay more attention to surplus rifles in the future.) I bought a spam can of 440 rounds for about $85.00, and will probably buy another mosin and a few cans of ammo before the end of the year if the economy holds up (self-employment can suck sometimes). I got an added bonus when I went to pick up my mosin. The store owner asked me if I wanted to buy an SKS. I asked how much. He said $150.00. I was interested, and ended up walking out with a beautifully maintained Norinco SKS, missing only the bayonet and cleaning rod.

Other News. Somthing Glenn Beck said the other night caught my attention. The national debt ceiling, which was raised by over $1,000,000,000,000.00 by democrats to something like $14,200,000,000,000.00, will have to be raised again sometime in February or March of 2011. This was purposefully set up by democrats. The dilemma for Republicans, if they control congress, will be to add further sanction to the willy-nilly printing of money to cover the national debt and appear to have no principles, or to adhere to principles and refuse to raise the debt ceiling which might have the effect of causing panic/collapse in the markets and pandemonium in the streets. Interesting. Could that be the galvanizing event? We'll have to see.

Patty Murray the Coathanger Queen

This post concerns abortion and due process of law. If you have a problem with my pro-life, pro-due process opinions, stop reading now.

I saw another political spot on TV this morning for and approved by Patty Murray. Actually, the spot was another pack of lies attempting to defame Dino Rossi, but it says volumes about Murray. In the ad, Rossi is portrayed as a relic of a better-forgotten era when abortion was disfavored and illegal. Of course, liberals never say they are in favor of abortion, they say that they favor "a woman's right to choose". By stating that Dino Rossi is against "a woman's right to choose" and portraying that as a bad thing, Patty Murray has essentially stated that she is pro-abortion.

A fetus is a living human being not yet born. It is a life, and no matter how the libtards try to frame an unborn baby's existence, I believe that the unborn human has a right to life. Jurisprudence has not quite caught up to this, but it will as soon as the politics are taken out of the analysis. The political roadblock to the ethically and scientifically sound reasoning that a living unborn human being has the right to life is the liberal position that the "woman's right to choose" is superior to the living unborn child's right to life. Thus the liberals have been successful in denying the living unborn child's right to due process of law before it's right to life is terminated.

We readily acknowledge that a person accused of a capital crime has the right to due process of law before his right to life is taken away by the state. We actually allow the judicial system to become the world's longest running circus once the accused has been found guilty and sentenced to the termination of his or her life. Although many of us express displeasure at the numerous and lengthy appeals that follow in most cases where a death sentence is imposed, we respect the judicial system we have with its standards of innocence until proven guilty, no cruel and unusual punishments, the right against self-incrimination, and the right to due process of law prior to deprivation of rights.

Patty Murray has demonstrated that, at the most benign interpretation of her actions, she does not understand the concept of due process of law. She supports granting of rights to causes she favors, but does not support due process of law for rights she does not favor. Her active support for the denial of due process of law to living unborn human beings prior to the termination of their lives tells me volumes about Ms. Murray having no respect for the right to life when it does not match up with her political beliefs. A person who has respect for the right to life and the concept of due process of law prior to the termination of the right to life supports these concepts regardless of his or her political beliefs. Ms. Murray's disrespect for the right to life and due process of law is why I referred to her as the Coathanger Queen.

Murray's disrespect for due process of law is apparent in other areas as well. At a time when mortgage-holding banks are trespassing on private property and changing locks on homes prior to completing foreclosure proceedings, where is Patty Murray? Should she not be stepping up and standing up for the the common man against the big banks when they act without due process of law? She will not because she is in the pocket of the big banks and does not care about individual homeowners. Murray supported bailing out the big banks with taxpayer money and supported the "financial reform" that was a giveaway to the big banks.

When Obama care had not yet passed and the Democrats were angling to shove an unconstitutional mandate to purchase insurance down our throats, where was Patty Murray? Oh, that's right, she was voting in favor of shoving this unconstitutional mandate down our throats.

When Chrysler Corporation was being shoved through bankruptcy proceedings and parties who had a contractual and legal right to be paid from the bankruptcy estate were cast aside in favor of the United Auto Workers Union and Libyan-owned Fiat Motors, where was Patty Murray? Certainly not standing up for the common man who had money invested in Chrysler. She was busy backing the union that contributed to her campaigns.

It is disturbing when a politician has no respect for the Constitution and for due process of law guaranteed by the Constitution regarding the ordinary affairs of Americans, such as choosing health insurance and investing money. It is downright appalling when a politician seeks to supplant the right to life, guaranteed by the Constitution and by our Creator, with an invented right not appearing in the Constitution and which appears downright silly when juxtaposed with the supplanted right. Which do you want, the right to live or the right to choose.

If I follow Murray's position to the logical extreme and decide that due process of law is no longer necessary when its application interferes with one's political principles, there would be no end to the carnage that would ensue. I don't like politicians that vote for Marxist policies and enact taxes upon me that I am unwilling to pay. My right to choose what works for me supplants the right of that politician to live. Hmmm, just where do libtards like Murray think that one would end? Especially if we call it the "right-to-choose-later-on", rather than the ugly truthful term retroactive abortion.

As tempting as it would be to adopt liberal principles in that scenario, I'll stick with supporting the right to life and the concept of due process of law.

As frustrating as the decision by George Caram Steeh III is upholding Obamacare, it ain't over yet. I believe that Steeh, a lowly U.S. District Court Judge in Michigan, issued a poorly reasoned and unconstitutional decision in upholding Obamacare. Some things have to be kept in perspective.

U.S. District Court judges are generally political hacks. They have generally been aligned with one political party or another throughout their legal career. Most judges started out as private attorneys or working for some organization. They got involved with various political causes to get noticed. Often some political entity, such as the governor, picks them to fill a judicial vacancy of some sort. Just as often a local judge will retire and the opportunistic lawyer will run for the seat. It is somewhat rare for a sitting judge to be defeated at election time, and my observation is that sitting judges are rarely replaced by challenge in the election.

Steeh was appointed by Bill Clinton. Consider the source. Sleaziest, most disrespectful to the office president in modern history appoints constitutionally illiterate judge (likely a political hack) to be a U.S. District Court Judge in Michigan. Like appointer, like appointee.

It is natural that with a marxist administration seeking to add legitimacy to one of its marxist agendas, the first judicial decision upholding the marxist agenda would come from a marxist political hack appointed by a sleazebag member of the marxist president's political party. I can only wonder what political and other pressure was applied to ensure that Steeh's decision was the first one on Obamacare.

U.S. District Court judges are the lowest level of the judiciary. They are the equivalent of the Superior Court or District Court judges in Washington. In Washington we have the Courts of Appeals above Superior and District Court, then the Supreme Court of Washington. If it weren't for boneheaded decisions by judges at the Superior Court and District Court level, we would not have most of the appellate court and supreme court decisions we rely upon every day. The same is true in the federal courts. Steeh is a bonehead judge who made a bonehead decision that will be reviewed. The Court of Appeals for that circuit might not be any brighter than Steeh, but the U.S. Supreme Court is where I am looking for the decision, as a Supremes decision will be the law of the land, not requiring any reconciliation among the federal circuits.

Obamacare will be like Heller and McDonald, having to weave its way through the federal courts of appeals to have the U.S. Supreme Court make the final determination, only in the case of Obamacare that it is an unconstitutional mandate. In the meantime, I will hold onto my stainless steel insurance policy and my prescription of 230 grain copper capsules.

To Washington voters: If you do not want the marxist agenda of government health care shoved down your throat, and would instead like to shove it back up Obama's ass, vote Dino Rossi for U.S. Senate on November 2.

Unemployment Steady at 9.6%, and A Bet

On my way to work this morning the news announced that unemployment for September 2010 held steady at 9.6%. Of course it did. No administration whose party controls the white house and congress would admit to an increase less than a month before a national election. If unemployment went down, you can be sure that the Obamanation himself would be trumpeting it from the rooftops. As it is, the mainstream/lamestream media had to make sure that I, registered voter, got the message. The news item opened with the announcement that unemployment held at 9.6% and ended with the prominent announcement that unemployment had held steady at 9.6%.

I am willing to bet $100.00* that within a week after the election on November 2, 2010 that the unemployment figures will be revised upward.

*Terms: If I win, I get paid in U.S. dollars. If I lose, I will pay in Zimbabwe dollars. If the winner does not have change for a $1,000,000,000,000.00 Zimbabwe bill, I reserve the right to pay in monopoly money. If Democrats retain control of both houses of congress, they will all have the same value.

To Washington voters: If you like high unemployment, increased taxes, increased home foreclosures, strangulation of small businesses, favoritism for public employee unions, citizen disarmament, and a host of other poxes on this great country, please remember to vote for Patty Murray on November 2.

This morning I got up a bit early. I turned on the TV and put on the coffee, but soon had to restrain myself from throwing my coffee mug at the TV. What would inspire such a reaction?

My Asshat Senator, Patty "Moron in Tennis Shoes" Murray.

Her latest campaign ad is voiced over in an ominous tone about "Jobs lost", "Homes Foreclosed" and "Big Banks being bailed out by taxpayers". I just cannot believe the chutzpah of this dimwitted, shit-for-brains, commie, libtard, Obama-ass-kissing piece of trash we have for a senator. Yes, I am still referring to Patty Murray, who has served three terms as senator and is running for a fourth.

Patty Murray has presided over the lost jobs, homes foreclosed, and big bank theft. She has supported every single Obama agenda item. And before Obama, she supported every Chris Dodd and Barney Frank scheme to defraud the taxpayers, including the Community Reinvestment Act and refusing to reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which directly contributed to the housing bubble and bust. Patty Murray voted for TARP and every stimulus plan proposed by the Obama administration, lining the pockets of the big banks at taxpayer expense. She voted for Obamacare, supports cap and trade, and supports letting the Bush tax cuts expire, all of which contribute to continued high unemployment.

Patty Murray is such a dishonest asshat that she not only runs away from her own record, but tries to pin the results of her substandard service in the senate on her opponent, who has not held public office since 2003, and only in the state legislature at that.

Voters of Washington State should pay attention to the disaster that Patty Murray has been for this state since she was elected in 1994, and particularly to her record since 2008 when the Democrats controlled the House, Senate, and Presidency.

I want change I can believe in. That's why I am voting to kick Patty Murray to the curb this November.

I don't know if this initiative will actually be on the ballot, but if it is I will be voting for it. I just wish that the patriot sponsoring the initiative, Mr. James E. Vaughn, would have added that the head of the tapeworm be of the current governor of the State of Washington. Our current governor, Christine Gregoire, has all the parasitic qualities of a tapeworm. Since it is unlikely that her face would adorn the tapeworm anytime soon, I guess the reverse will have to do.

Retarded Politician of the Week honors go to soon-not-to-be Senator Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska. The twit thinks that the senate seat her daddy gave to her belongs to her forever and ever and ever. I was born and raised in Alaska and consider myself to be a real Alaskan, rather than the Cheechakos who moved in later when the state was booming. Thus, I feel qualified to pass judgment on Ms. Murkowski.

When Lisa's daddy, Frank, was the sitting senator from Alaska, he decided to run for governor. This was back in 2002. When Frank was elected governor, his new job included filling the unexpired term of his senate seat. After looking far and wide across the vast stretches of tundra and mountain ranges, Frank could find only one qualified person among the 600,000 plus residents of Alaska: his own daughter, Lisa. People howled at the blatant nepotism, but Frank was generally well-liked at the time and things settled down.

In 2004, the Murkowski name was still somewhat respected in Alaska, and Lisa was elected to a full senate term of her own.

In 2006, the people had figured out what a careerist, cronyist, nepotist politician Frank really was and replaced him in the Republican primary with Sarah Palin, who had run as a reform candidate. Sarah delivered the reform she promised, going after corrupt politicians and bureaucrats in both parties.

Fast-forward to 2010. Nepotist Frank had been taken down by the Palin machine. Lisa has become a career D.C. politician, out of touch with her constituents. Charismatic candidate Joe Miller challenges her in the primary, promising reform. Reformist Sarah backs Joe. Lisa loses primary.

Lisa does not like being spurned by her subjects. First she tries to hijack the Libertarian Party by negotiating with the Libertarian candidate to allow her the Libertarian party ballot spot. She is turned down.

What to do? What to do? It appears that the only option left is to conclude that the electorate of her state is a bunch of idiots who have made a terrible mistake in voting for a real conservative instead of dear Lisa. So she pulls out the Joe Lieberman playbook and decides to run a write-in campaign as an independent.

(Note: The Republican party should have never helped Joe Lieberman against crazy dipshit Ned Lamont in 2006. If the Republicans had any prinicples they would have exploited the split in the liberal electorate caused by Lieberman/Lamont to elect a Republican)

Lisa, Princess of Murkowskiland, please pack up your crap and just go home. The people have spoken, and they don't want you anymore. Sorry, but this is true. Don't insult the great people of the great State of Alaska by forcing yourself upon them with your write-in campaign. Don't insult Republicans and consevatives by helped another Democrat to be elected. Just keep your chin up and go home.

I know that Princess Lisa will not listen to this. By now we all know about the plans of Dove World Outreach Center to burn a Koran on September 11, 2010 and all of the controversy surrounding it. The Moon God followers, including the one in the White House and his minion in charge of the Afghanistan war, are going bananas. Jeez, I had been brainwashed by the liberals to believe that burning flags and holy books and pissing on Jesus was my Constitutional right. Now they are telling me that burning the Mohammedan holy book is a terrible think that should be forbidden.  If I have to put up with idiots desecrating my beliefs, the idiots should have to put up with desecration of theirs and that of their strange Mohammedan bedfellows.

I just finished reading the Effa Bee Eye Jacksonville Division Intelligence Bulletin regarding the Koran burning. The Effa Bee Eye describes Dove as "a New Testament Church with a controversial past".  Why in the hell does this matter? Dove, its leaders, and its parishioners have a Constitutional right to burn Korans every day of the week if they want to. It is interesting that the Effa Bee Eye uses the label "New Testament" rather than say that Dove is full of Christians.   Next, they will be a "man-made, non-man observing congregational institution".

The Effa Bee Eye is worried about the Dove World Outreach Center event because it has "high confidence that, as with past incidents perceived as acts of desecration against Islam, extremist actors will continue to threaten or attempt to harm the leaders, organizers, or attendees (of) the event". The Effa Bee Eye identifies two such threats, derived from open source intelligence (means they looked it up on the internet): Two online threats posted on known extremist Web site “al-Faloja”. One threat exposes a desire by the poster to detonate himself in the Dove church. The other, by Abu Aulayman al-Nasir, threatens to kill "tens of you in place of every letter in the book of Allah".

Instead of fretting over one church's exercise of its Constitutional right of free expression, why doesn't the Effa Bee Eye track down the persons making those threats? I have not seen or heard of any news coverage indicating the Effa Bee Eye is investigating any of these threats. In my mind, the threats of a bunch of inflamed Moon God worshippers is less of a worry than the government's negative attitude toward a Christian church exercising its right to freedom of expression, and the message sent to Mohammedans that their threats of violence against non-Mohammedans is warranted, expected, and tolerated.

Instead of playing the worrywart over the threatened actions of insane jihadists and slandering a church exercising its Constitutional rights, the Effa Bee Eye should be a defender of freedom.  The Effa Bee Eye should turn its predilection towards disproportionate use of force against Americans onto those who threaten the freedoms of Americans. Then the jihadists might begin to understand that we will not submit to their assault on our God-given rights.

Obama is apparently promising $180,000,000,000.00 in tax cuts and infrastructure spending. Whoo Hoo!

Will this offset the additional taxes in Obamacare and the rise in taxes when Obama refuses to extend the "Bush tax cuts"? Will this result in no net increase in taxes? Will this cost businesses substantial increases in accounting and compliance costs? Has anyone with a brain analyzed this proposal before applauding it?

Regarding infrastructure spending, has anyone checked to see what the state contribution is to these projects? Often federal grants have a required state contribution. Where is this money going to come from when many states are furloughing employees, cutting back hours of service, and cannot afford to pay unemployment compensation costs? Is this a giveaway to the unions?

Remember Clinton's policing grants back in the 1990's? These declined over time to where the locality was left with the full salary, benefits, and equipment costs of these new officers, who were more than likely members of the police union. Once hired, hard to fire.

Seems like the idiots on Wall Street will jump at anything thrown to them, and will believe that unicorns named Barack can perform miracles.

I guess they might as well believe in miracles, as the unicorn has yet to perform.

Pringles as Survival Food?

My camping trip a few weeks ago gave me the chance to use and evaluate a few newer pieces of equipment, which I still need to write about. However, I think I made a discovery (at least for me) about a possible survival comfort food. For those of you who hate Pringles potato crisps, you can stop reading now.

In September 2008 I went on a family camping trip. As I usually do, I packed some comfort foods to snack on. Part of the snack supply was two cans of Pringles. One regular chips, the other cheddar cheese flavor.

I have been taking my time cleaning out the camper after the last trip, and last weekend I discovered the two cans of Pringles in a cabinet behind a bunch of plastic plates and cups we really don't use. After sitting in the camper through two Eastern Washington winters and two summers, I had my doubts that they would be edible. The expiration dates were in November 2009, but I don't pay a lot of attention to these. I was more concerned about the extremes in weather and the possibility of the oils turning rancid and moisture working its way into the containers.

Not to fear. I have opened both cans of Pringles and both taste just fine. I have been snacking on the regular chips for a couple of days now and I am having the cheese flavor with my sandwich for lunch.

If Pringles can survive two years of the weather extremes out in the camper, I wonder how long they will last inside the house, where the temperature never gets above 75 degrees. Rotated on a first in, first out basis, it appears that Pringles would make a good survival comfort food.

Minichamp Swiss Army knife.

Thumbdrive (will vary depending upon what cases I'm working on).

Pocket flosser/toothpick. Not just for teeth. The pick end is handy for cleaning small items.

Not shown: I invariably have a paper towel wadded up in my pocket.

On the weekends and other days off I add a few more items, such as a larger knife, a multi-tool, my pistol, and a spare magazine.

A Little Prep Shopping Yesterday

I make a point of buying some prep items a couple of times a month. Mostly long term food storage. I have purchased from Emergency Essentials and Honeyville Grain on a semi-regular basis, but I try to limit those purchases to things that are not readily available in my area.

For example, I have not found an economical source for freeze-dried foods. So I have purchased freeze dried fruits and vegetables from Emergency Essentials and Honeyville. Same with flavored textured vegetable protein.

Some dehydrated foods and dry foods I have been able to find locally. Split peas, beans, and rice are the obvious dry foods available locally. I have also noticed that some supermarkets are expanding their bulk foods areas, and that some of the bulk foods are dehydrated and dry foods ideal for prep storage.

I was at Fred Meyer (division of Kroger) the other day and looked at the bulk foods. Normally I only go near this area to get a bag of mixed nuts or macadamias. I noticed that Freddy's had hard red wheat berries for 92 cents a pound. This compared favorably to the price from some online sources, which is $1.00 a pound, and up. 92 cents a pound for wheat berries still seemed a little much to me, especially when compared to the price of flour at less than 50 cents a pound.

The Spokane area has at least half a dozen grocery store chains, including Safeway, Albertsons, Yoke's, Rosauers, Super One, Fred Meyer, Walmart, and Winco. Winco is a relative newcomer to our area, and has stores in Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Utah, and California. It is like grocery shopping in a warehouse. The prices are usually better than other stores, but one must suffer the inconvenience of the cattle-call mentality and bagging one's own groceries. I limit myself to one trip or so per month to avoid the aggravation.

Winco has a large bulk foods section. I found hard red wheat berries for 42 cents a pound. Thirty pounds plus the bucket and mylar bag runs about 19 dollars. Yellow popcorn was 64 cents a pound, so thirty pounds and the bucket/bag runs about 26 dollars. Winco also has about three kinds of dehydrated potatoes, five or more kinds of rice, a variety of other grains, and peas, beans, and pastas. They also have bulk sauce mixes, seasonings, and spices, for which my smaller mylar bags and plastic coffee cans will be ideal.

One interesting find was dried tomatoes. These are not dried in the sense of dehydrated to a near crisp, but are more like sun dried tomatoes. I figure that they are too gooey to put into long-term storage, but are treated for spoilage with sulfur dioxide. I bought a pound (at $3.90 a pound) to try drying out in the dehydrator and putting into storage. If this works I will buy more, as tomatoes are a necessity for pasta sauces, chili, and soups.

If the tomatoes are successful I may try this with dried fruits like pineapple, apples, strawberries, and cherries.

Slowly but steadily I am working towards having my year supply of food for the family, with enough variety to eat decently and avoid appetite fatigue.

Calm Before the Storm?

Things seem to be too quiet out in the world right now, given what is going on. Could this period in time be the calm before the storm?

War between Israel and Iran/Syria/Hezbollah-Lebanon/Turkey has not erupted over the Bushehr nuclear plant in Iran, despite predictions that Israel's window of opportunity closed on August 21. The Obama administration has supposedly assured Israel that Iran would need 12 months to actually fuel and arm a nuke, but who actually believes anything that comes out of the Obama administration? All parties to this in the middle east are still preparing for the possibility of war. The only wild card in my mind is what our apostate president does or does not do. The announcement that peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians are imminent is nothing but a diversion.

The Fed has committed to another round of quantitative easing, or monetization of federal debt. That the Fed continues to play its last weapon against economic collapse tells me that they are only buying time until the collapse. They know it is coming, we know it is coming, they are only buying enough time for their friends on Wall Street to take their money and head for the exits.

The DJIA, Nasdaq, and S&P 500 have essentially been flat all summer long. The close today is right about where it was on June 10. Sure, there have been minor ups and downs, but there is not any real movement. Not that there would be "real" movement anyways, as I have read that the stock market is pretty much driven by high frequency trading at big investment banks and that individual investors and a lot of institutional investors have fled the market. And not that the stock market is a reliable indicator of the economy in general. It might be when it finally takes the big dump, but that will be when the big boys are taking their money and checking their passports, which will be too late for any preparedness measures.

Unemployment continues to be bad news. I read that big business is essentially refusing to add employees until consumers start spending again. In a nutshell, there is nothing left to spend. Small businesses are afraid to hire, even if they could, due to uncertainty over Obamacare provisions and uncertainty in the tax code. The "Bush tax cuts" are likely to expire and a tax-hungry collectivist/redistributionist central government is hungrily eyeing the only remaining productive consitituency without representation in the White House: small business owners. No small business owner in his right mind would add to the payroll now. Looks like 10%+ official unemployment may be with us for quite a while.

Food shortages are rumored to be on the horizon. The Russians will reportedly not have sufficient harvest to feed their people. The Ugandan wheat rust has not been reported on lately, but at last report there was no known immune wheat strain and the fungus was on the move. The U.S. has no strategic wheat reserve anymore. There have also been rumors of reduced wheat harvests in parts of the U.S. and South America, and of coming rice shortages in Asia. Add to this the unknown effects of the chemicals used in the GoM oil spill upon crops in the gulf states, and the natural and government-imposed droughts in California.

There are already reports of food inflation. Jim Rawles has added a new feature on SurvivalBlog to monitor inflation, and the anectdotal reports indicate a rise in food prices. Could be inflation, could be increasing scarcity, same effect to the consumer. GrandPappy, at grandpappy.info, has kept track of inflation on food preps since early 2008, based on WalMart prices. He reports on a month-to-month basis.

Diversions are everywhere. The Obamas are on vacation number six. There may still be oil in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Gay marriage will be legal again in California. Muslims plan to build a mosque near Ground Zero. Charlie Rangel and Maxine Waters are crooks. Nancy Pelosi wants to investigate us. Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, and any number of celebrities have diarrhea of the mouth and constipation of the brain. Two of these are worth paying attention to, but should not distract us from our preparations.

I don't know if the end is near, a few months away, or years away. I don't even know if "the end" as in TEOTWAWKI will result in a Mad Max existence or just a permanently reduced standard of living. Will there be revolution or continued subservience to the central government? Don't know. M.D. Creekmore has a great debate going on regarding the meaning of TEOTWAWKI. The comments are closed, but run the gamut and are well worth reading for what others are thinking.

Despite all the signs of impending doom, there is a strange calm that pervades. If my father or grandfather were still alive, I would ask them how it felt in late summer 1939, or around Thanksgiving in 1941. Did they feel then as I do now? I wish I knew.

Sorry, couldn't think of a good title. My significant other uses "mo'flappuh" as a punctuation word like some use "motherf****r". Keeps floating around in my head, so I thought I would use it. More or less just post-mini-vacation random thoughts.

I got back last night from a four day camping trip into the wilds of the Panhandle National Forest in North Idaho. Beautiful area. Not pristine, but somewhat removed from civilization. The only amenity at the campsite area is a concrete outhouse. I love the serenity of the place, and the fact that there is no cell phone reception for miles around.

I have been out of the loop for the better part of a week, as I quit keeping up on things a few days before we left on our trip. The preparation for a family camping trip is something else. I do most of the packing and preparation for the family. I tend to overpack, as I will not leave the campsite and drive back to the nearest town just because I forgot something. I also prepare for the possibility that we may be there for a couple of extra days in case something happens.

I took the opportunity to test a couple of new pieces of equipment. A lot of my preps consist of camping-type gear, stuff that can be used when there is no power, running water, etc. I will post my own reviews of these things in the next few days.

Scanning some of the news and blogs this morning, I see that the s**t keeps gradually getting deeper, while King Soetoro and the royal family keep mugging for the camera while mugging the populace. My friend in the intelligence community says that something is likely to happen prior to the "election". Looks like he may be right.

Time to get back to work. Stuff piles up around here when I am gone.

Coffee Cans for Storage. The plastic kind that just about every coffee brand has switched to in the past few years. There are a number of food items that I do not want to store in glass canning jars or five gallon buckets. Glass jars get nixed because of the potential for breakage when moving, and buckets get nixed because I do not want to buy such a quantity of that I can fill a five gallon bucket. The solution I have found is to buy the one gallon mylar food grade bags and pack them inside plastic coffee cans that I would otherwise discard. Between home and office I get about two of these each month. An added bonus is that six of the cans fit into the same size box as six number 10 cans. This size of storage container is ideal for spices, seasoning/gravy/sauce packets, and drink mixes such as Kool Aid. Once full and the mylar bag is sealed, pop on the lid and seal with 100% silicone.

Test Your Tools and Equipment. I bought a sight adjustment tool for one of my rifles a few months ago and filed it away with my other gear. I assumed that when I needed it, it would serve its intended purpose. Big mistake. The other day I was boresighting the rifle and needed to make a sight adjustment, so I dug out the adjustment tool. The tool has a hole through which the sight is supposed to drift under pressure from a thumbscrew. The hole was not big enough. This would have been a major problem in the field, but luckily enough I was sighting in at home. I got out my set of drills and enlarged the hole. From now on I will test every tool and piece of equipment as I acquire it.

Thoughts on Plumbing. Most preppers have a plan for providing water and eliminating waste during a grid down situation. The specifics don't really matter, as situations vary for acquisition of potable water and elimination of human waste, and each must plan according to his or her needs and what resources are available. For those of us on public systems, more preparation may be needed than immediately comes to mind. When the grid goes down and public water pressure drops, it is a simple matter to isolate one's plumbing system from public water: just shut off the main water valve coming into the building or onto the property. But what about sewage? Even with the public water supply being off, people can still pour water down the drain and flush their toilets. And if the grid is down, the pumps that move the sewage through the public system and/or process the waste are likely to be down as well. If one is at the top of a hill, I suppose there may be no problems. However, sewage might back up in other areas. Aside from the water traps in the drains, how does one shut off the sewer system that is connected to the house? I am thinking that one answer may be to have drain seals ready to install in each sink, bathtub, laundry room, toilet, and floor drain in the house. If anyone has any other ideas on this, let me know.

Politics. I am thinking about this week's Retarded Politician of the week. Congressman Fortney "Pete" Stark has come up with a hare-brained scheme to tax the exchange of currencies, so that everyone who trades a U.S. dollar for a Canadian one would pay a tax of 0.005% on the transaction. I am not making the next part up: It's for the children. Oh, and to provide health care in other countries, and to fight climate change. On the other hand, Senator Lindsey Graham has pretty much stated that he will vote to confirm Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court because Obama won the election and is entitled to have his choice provided Kagan is "qualified." Does this idiot remember Robert Bork? He was qualified, but shot down by the Demojackals because he is a conservative. At least Stark is consistent with the "progressive" whack-jobs in his party. Thus I am leaning towards Senator Grahamnesty for a repeat. Who knows, maybe some other elected shithead will catch my attention.

Is it too late for Tom Vilsack to try and get his job back as Iowa governor? It appears that with all the hullabaloo from the racist camps of Jesse Jackson and the NAACP that Vilsack may soon be unemployed for firing Department of Agriculture employee Shirley Sherrod. Through her own statements at a NAACP gathering Ms. Sherrod cast the USDA in a bad light, which should be grounds enough for firing. It is in the private employment sector. Gub'mint business is different, somehow, especially when race is involved.

Anniversary of a Leftist Massacre

Originally there were 72 men, women, and children, but Cuban patrol boats rammed the tug and mowed down the civilians with a water cannon, sending all but 29 to a watery grave. Only through the intervention of a passing Greek freighter were there any survivors. The survivors were captured and punished by the Castro regime.

Retarded Politician of the Week honors go to Senator Ben Nelson, D-Nebraska. Nelson announced today that he would support the finance reform bill which is awaiting a vote in the senate. In announcing his support, Nelson said, “I will support the Wall Street reform bill to end bailouts, add commonsense consumer protections and make sure that Nebraska Main Street businesses are not adversely affected as we rein in recklessness on Wall Street."
Let's see, bailouts of all those Wall Street firms occurred because the House of Representatives and Senate proposed and then approved laws that used taxpayer funds to bail out those firms. Then the House and Senate discovered that their poorly written bailout package allowed Wall Street firms to earn obscene profits from taxpayer funds. Then the House and Senate propose a law which would prevent the House and Senate from future bailouts of Wall Street firms with taxpayer funds, which is misnamed the Restoring American Financial Stability Act of 2010.

In essence, Senator Nelson is in favor of a law which would prevent him and his Komrades from passing a law giving taxpayer funds to Wall Street firms.

It's like saying: I voted for a terrible law, so I will support a law that would prevent me from approving of another such terrible law in the future.

How retarded. Nelson proves that you cannot legislate common sense.

Runners up: Senator Olympia Snowe, R(INO)-Maine and Senator Scott Brown, R(INO)-Massachusetts for betraying their principles and supporting such a deeply flawed piece of legislation. Legal Survival No. 2: Avoid "Day of Reckoning" Nonsense

First of all, I don't prep just for some cataclysmic end-of-the-world event where the U.S. government will fail and I get my chance to play Mad Max in the post-apocalyptic world. I prep because situations can happen in which I must be reliant upon myself for surival. These range from power outages to the collapse of Western Civilization.

Speaking of the collapse of Western Civilization, it is clear to anyone with two brains cells working at the same time that Western Civilization is in the process of imploding. The reasons are far too numerous to discuss in a blog post. Aside from the pervasive intrusions into our God-given liberty by our supposedly representative federal government, our government has reached the point where it cannot pay out the spoils that the citizens have voted themselves from the public treasury. The last act in this farce will be when the Gub'mint credit card is declined.

Many states, counties, and municipalities face a similar fate. Similar, and not identical, only because states, counties, and municipalities do not have the ability to print money. Any government can borrow with the consent of its constituents. Most have borrowed and/or run up deficits beyond the ability of a vindictive, spurned ex-wife at the casino with the ex-husband's wallet and credit cards. And all with the consent of the governed. After all, 52% of the country voted for Barack Hussein Obama, including a majority of non-felons who were born in the United States and actually voted their own ballot. In my own state, in the last two elections a majority of voters chose the libtard Christine Gregoire for governor, including 100% of the convicted-felon, post-vivos, incapacitated, non-citizen, and non-existent (also known as ACORN-registered) voters.

Now, finally, I am able to get to the point. I have been reading some posts indicating that in this collapse cycle and/or revolution there will be a day of reckoning for government employees, at the hands of liberty-loving citizens. There is some disagreement on targets: It ranges from only politicians and judges and others who have been direct participants in destroying liberty/the constitution/the republic, to all government employees. By the way, all elected officials and appointees (even judges) are government (or public) employees.

This idea that any government employees should be targeted, unless they are directly threatening you or your family, is nonsense. Despite the encroachment of the FedGov on our liberties, we are not at war and are not even close to being at war, no matter how much "tyrannical government" hyperbole is drawn up. We still have something that was unavailable to the colonists in 1776: We can vote to change our government. The government we have was voted into power by the citizens; this government and its abuses are what the collective citizenry voted for and apparently wants. An opportunity exists in November 2010 to change the government, and towards that purpose I recommend voting out every politician who has crapped on the Constitution. That means just about every Democrat, Republican, Independent, and other affiliated politician serving in Congress, state legislatures, governorships, county commissions, and city councils across the country. Yes, we do have a bill of grievances to be resolved, but if we want change we must use our votes first.

Despite my declaration that we are not at war with the government and no where close to being at war, the government has passed laws and taken actions which may reasonably be interpreted by free citizens as increasing the power of the government at the expense of individual liberty. As a free citizen I do take offense at such laws and actions by the government and I do believe that free citizens do have grievances against this currently extra-Constitutional government which need redress.

I know that many have lost confidence in the power of the vote to change the government from its liberty-destroying path. I recall an exchange I had with Ye Old Furt about what I can do with my vocation to help others in the prepping community. I am not a gunsmith, millwright, farmer, military tactician, or other profession which may be inherently useful in a post-government, post-collapse/apocalypse world. I do, however, have legal knowledge that I can pass on to others in order to help those of us in the "liberty movement" and to convert others to the cause. Our founding fathers invested much time in appealing to the citizenry and seeking peaceful redress to grievances prior to targeting the government for revolution. We should do the same prior to taking up arms.

What I do on a regular basis is to talk to others I know and encounter about conditions in this country, how far we have strayed from the Constitution, what individual rights are recognized by the Constitution, and what we can do to change the government and restore liberty. What can you do? What do you do?

This topic has been simmering beneath the surface with me for some time. The main reason is that I see derogatory references from time-to-time, even from bloggers I respect such as Jim Dakin and Michael Boone, in regard to lawyers. Not all lawyers are cogs in the wheel of government oppression. Most are actually decent people, just as most travel-trailer dwelling survivalist types are decent people. I am a lawyer and I am getting a little tired of the over-generalizations about lawyers. I am especially tired of the oft-quoted, mis-contexted Shakespeare, "first thing we do, we kill all the lawyers", which was actually expressed by Dick the butcher in support of Jack Cade's socialistic revolution with Cade himself as dictator. So I naturally take offense at the idea that rank and file, non-lawmaking, non-policy-making government employees should be fair game.

I agree with M.D. Creekmore that government will not disappear in the event of a collapse or other cataclysm. Government will likely still exist, and will likely still be able to take care of anyone who moves to attack it. By definition of a revolution, the government will still exist in the event of a revolution. Attacks on government will be met with government action: persecution, prosecution, suicide by government agent, etc.

Besides the certainty of government action against anti-government action, there are other considerations of a more practical matter:

1) The inherent unconscionableness of attacking low-level, non-policymaking employees. Low-level employees are citizens and have friends and family just like almost everyone else. The public opinion backlash for attacking a low-level employee would be disastrous for the attacker(s) and harmful to the liberty movement.

2) Consistency would require attacking any person or entity that "feeds the beast". I am referring here to persons who have advocated all governmental employees as fair game because they have chosen to be a cog in the machine. So, any person who knowingly and willingly provides service or support to the oppressive government is a legitimate target, if we are to be consistent. Did you pay your taxes? If yes, put an "X" on your forehead. Did you provide service or materials to a goverment entity, even if it was just mowing the courthouse lawn? If yes, put an "X" on your forehead. Do you show up for work at a company that provides services or materials to a government entitiy? If yes, put an "X" on your forehead. Do you get a government check of any kind? If yes, put an "X" on your forehead. So what if you could go to prison for not paying taxes, or lose your home for not going to work, or starve to death if you don't cash the government check, but we are talking about principles of liberty here, which require such sacrifice.

3) There are too many liberty-loving, yet peaceful citizens who would be alarmed at the idea of attacking low-level government employees, and would turn in anyone who had even formulated a plan to do so. I am one of them.

4) There are a lot of government employees who are liberty-loving and armed citizens of this country. Just as any nut-job who thinks he is going to "kill all the lawyers" had better bring his own body bag when targeting me (mine are on backorder), he had better not ignore the fact that many government employees also believe in their right to keep and bear arms and to defend the life and liberty of themselves and their families.

I had not originally thought of making this a "Legal Survival" post, but I realized that I was due for another installment and that this is a perfect opportunity to pass on some legal information for preppers.

So here it is: Don't get any ideas of exacting retribution on government employees or that government employees are fair game in the coming revolution or efforts to restore the Constitutional Republic. The usual exceptions apply for defense of self and family, although you better be damn sure that you or your loved ones are in danger of imminent death or grave bodily injury. In the case of revolution or restoration of the republic, execution of those responsible for tyrannous acts would be proper only after due process of law. If you expect the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, make sure that you are prepared to guarantee that right for all citizens.

Why Kalifornia is in the Crapper and Won't Be Coming Out

The state of Kalifornia is home to the Silicon Valley, perhaps the largest concentration of technological engineering knowledge in the U.S. Kalifornia has about one-tenth of the U.S. population and a state budget larger than the budget of many countries. Kalifornia should be on the leading edge of effective and efficient government.

Kalifornia, however, cannot reprogram the payroll computers before the year 2012 to follow a simple directive: reduce the pay of state workers to federal minimum wagee as ordered by Governator Ahnold Schwarzenegger and upheld by Kalifornia's 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals.

The reasons for the inability to reduce the pay of state workers, as given by Kalifornia politicians and bureaucrats, are legion:
--the payroll system is 60 years old and was last updated in 1970, according to Hallye Jordan, spokesperson for the Kalifornia state controller's office
--the 21st Century Project to update payroll computer techology is inexplicably behind schedule despite having been conceived in the 1990's
--the original contractor hired to fix the problems was fired because it went bankrupt (too bad Kalifornia voters don't do the same to their government), according to John Harrigan, former division chief of Kalifornia payroll services
--employees with expertise in the various programming languages used in the payroll programs keep retiring, according to Harrigan
--the legislature would have to pass a bill to modify the computer system or to collect more data, according to the Kalifornia Department of Justice, despite the legislature having approved just such a thing in the 21st Century Project in 2005

Of course, none of the politicians nor bureaucrats will address the two real reasons that Kalifornia cannot adjust its payroll to comply with the Governator's order, much less pass a budget that keeps Kalifornia out of bankruptcy and/or begging at the Obamination's door:
1) The Kalifornia government is completely controlled by Democrats, with the exception of the RINO governator.
2) The Kalifornia Democrats are completely under the control of the Kalifornia state employees unions.
If the real reasons given above do not make sense to you, please immediately move to Kalifornia and commence building a fence around the state to prevent like-minded Kalifornians from exiting Kalifornia. This would also serve as an effective border fence.

The date may be July 4th, 2010, but the celebration is of Independence Day. Just as Christmas has been watered down by the multicultural libtards to Happy Holidays, the day that 13 colonies declared their independence from Britain.

For people like Supreme Court nominuee Elena Kagan, it is July Fourth, and has no real meaning, since she does not recognize the significance of the Declaration of Indendence and the human rights that document recognizes. Note I said "recognizes" and not "creates". For libtards, rights do not really exists. Rights cannot be changed by any man, woman, or government, for they are bestowed by our Creator. When libtards say rights, they mean privileges, priveleges which can be changed or taken away by legislative fiat, executive order, or reinterpretation of the "living" constitution.

Today I am celebrating Independence Day and the men who "with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor".

I am remembering these carefully chosen words, directed by thirteen servient colonies to a militarily superior tyrannical master:

Does anyone today know what happened to those brave men who signed the Declaration of Independence? Here is some information that was recently emailed to me:

When I see libtards reduce Independence Day to July 4th, I am dismayed that a date in history on which our freedom as human beings, not just colonists, was declared has been reduced to a numerical recreational holiday.

On this day, celebrate the Declaration of Independence and its declaration to the crown of your God given rights as a human being. Good News from the Supremes

I haven't read the actual decision yet, but Newsmax is reporting that the Supreme Court of the United States, in a 5-4 decision, ruled that the Second Amendment applies equally to the federal government and to the states. I expect the usual legal bullshit allowing exceptions for certain safety and public interest issues, and as expected Justice Sotomayor is anti-Second Amendment, but overall this is good news. The Second Amendment is the last Constitutional Amendment to be recognized as applicable to the states through the 14th Amendment.

Prep Like It's 1973

Not too long ago I wrote a post about how war (a real war, not a "police action" like Iraq and Afghanistan) is imminent. The reasons keep growing as to why I believe this is going to happen by August at the latest. See this article, this article, this article, and this article. Note that three of these article are from DebkaFiles. I visit the Debka site about every day to see what is going on in the middle east. I recommend that all preppers add this site to their regular reading. Northeast Intelligence Network is another good site to follow regarding threats to the U.S.

If war does break out in the middle east, expect oil prices to go through the roof. Remember what happened to oil prices and supply in 1973 Israel was at war and we suffered through an oil embargo from the middle east because we supported Israel. While circumstances in 2010 are not likely to be the same, the effect on price and supply could be quite similar. Now would be the time to make sure that all available gasoline, diesel, kerosene, and propane containers/tanks are full. Of course, all of us should have some supply of fuel already treated and stashed away, right?

I think that the effect of a middle east war on oil prices will be the least of our worries. Look for higher prices on food and other necessities, if not outright shortages and government enforced rationing. Civil unrest, martial law, suspended elections, suspension of the Constitution, the whole shebang. My own source confirms that the federal government has plans for all of these in the works and has been conducting joint planning and exercises with state and county level law enforcement.

I believe that now is the time to put the preps in high gear. Food and fuel are both relatively cheap right now. Take advantage of it.

I have given some additional thought to Retarded Politician of the Week, Secretary of Labor Hilda L(ibtard) Solis. While I recogize that her announcement of help to illegal alien workers for "fair pay" is just another chapter of the Obamination's plans to sell out U.S. citizens to any special interest group likely to vote for the Progressive/Marxist Obamagenda, there may be a silver lining to Ms. Solis' promise of help to those who cannot be legally employed in the U.S.

U.S. companies who employ illegal aliens are a major encouragement of the continued flow of illegal aliens into the U.S. These companies try to boost profits by paying lower wages to, and often no payroll taxes on, illegal alien workers. The hiring of illegal aliens displaces American workers. It also depresses wages as Americans are forced to compete in the workplace against the illegal aliens who will work for lower wages and off-the-books wages.

If the Department of Labor forces U.S. companies to give "fair pay" to illegal alien workers and to pay the taxes associated with their employment, U.S. companies may very well abandon illegal alien workers. Besides the potential liability to companies for unpaid payroll taxes, penalties, and interest, laws in many states provide for double or triple damages against an employer for failure to pay earned wages and/or the minimum wage along with attorney fees and costs. With the Department of Labor now showing a willingness to pursue the enforcement of wage laws, U.S. companies have a substantial incentive to comply. This would greatly reduce any benefits to hiring low-wage illegal aliens and make hiring American citizens more attractive.

With a step up in wage law enforcement, jobs for illegal aliens could dry up quite rapidly. With fewer prospects for employment, many illegal aliens would likely leave the U.S., and fewer would come into the country. The law of unintended consequences may strike yet again.

Retarded Politician of the Week

It's been a while since I have posted a Retarded Politician of the Week. Not that there has been a shortage of candidates. To the contrary, I am overwhelmed by the number of worthy contenders. So much so that I have not been able to make up my mind. That is, until today.

U.S. Department of Labor Secretary Hilda L(ibtard). Solis is by far the most mentally deficient politician I have heard about this week. Ms. Solis has promised that the Department of Labor will help illegal aliens to receive "fair pay" for their work in the U.S. Illegal aliens who under U.S. law cannot be legally employed in the U.S. How freaking retarded is that? Does Solis represent Americans or did she prematurely act on behalf of the North American Union? Will illegal workers be paid in Ameros? Is Kommissar Solis legally in the U.S.?
